Octogeddon

If you like action-strategy games that bring a few interesting roguelike ideas together, you might want to look into Octogeddon. This popular 2018 release, released on PC and on Nintendo Switch, was developed by All Yes Good. Though this is very a small game in terms of its design and its ambition, there is a highly satisfying gameplay loop that can offer you a tremendous starting experience.

If you are looking for a game that could offer you something a little bit different, you might wish to look into this title.

Addictive gameplay with an intriguing style

The first thing to note is that this game is developed by George Fan. Fan worked on the hugely popular Plants vs Zombies series, and you can immediately feel some tonal similarities. It has the same comical art and writing style, and the same addictive gameplay nature. This does make it pretty easy to start playing, and it is one of those games that is very easy to learn, if a little more challenging to master.

The game itself was given a lot of positive feedback during development, and the end result is a highly enjoyable little title. You play as an octopus who has sworn vengeance on those pesky humans, and you fight off against various foes by using your eight arms. As the game goes on, you get upgrade skills that you can use to make your arms more powerful, diverse, and skilful.

Like most games that follow the roguelike idea, you will be spending a lot of time replaying the same areas and working through the same old content. This is fun, though, as what content is in Octogeddon is a lot of fun to play through and thus it can be fun to slowly but surely improve, grow, and master the areas that appear repeatedly.

Highly satisfying seafaring chaos (7.5/10)

There are many games like Octogeddon, but few games manage to capture the general style. Yes, it is pretty clear that Fan has kept to the same kind of system that worked so well for him with Plants vs Zombies. This is not a negative by any means, though, as the previous work by Fan was great fun. This maintains much of the same personality and charisma, but it does arguably lack some of the replay value of PvZ.

7.5

It is a good game, though, and its art style and general writing should keep you coming back for more. It is a somewhat slow burn, and it does lack the same replay value of its spiritual predecessor, but there is more than enough content in the middle-ground area to make this a hugely enjoyable little title. Yes, it might be lacking in the replay value of its predecessor, and it can be somewhat glitchy, but there is a lot to like about this title if you enjoyed other works by Fan in the past.

Pros

  • Enjoyable art and writing style makes this feel witty and charming
  • Retains the same addictive gameplay loops of previous works by Fan

Cons

  • Lacks the replayability of the previous Plants vs Zombies works made by Fan
  • Can be somewhat glitchy and crash-happy, though this has improved since release
