ORX

It feels like a while since we've seen a good tower defense game. ORX is a title that aims to rekindle the thrill of defending your prized assets against growing hordes of foes, adopting a fantasy setting and our traditional enemy - the orc. So will we see the roots of tower defense come back to life in this indie title, or will we see a new take on the classical mechanics?

The game's visual style and integrated card-based mechanics already show that ORX will be slightly different. The gameplay looks intense, fast-paced, and ultimately thrilling. But we know games can be a swing and a miss when developers go outside the box. Though there are those rare occasions when they manage to strike gold, and we're here, ORX is one of those titles.

Mean, Green, and Lean

So what's the unique aspect of ORX? Gameplay takes its core values from the tower defense genre, but accomplishing tasks requires some competence in card games. The title is a fusion between defense and a deck builder, where players will build up their towers by playing the correct cards. But time is of the essence as legions of orcs descend upon your castle.

Even though the game is a fusion of different genre mechanics, ORX remains surprisingly straightforward. Players will see action almost immediately but not be overwhelmed with card-based decisions in an instant. You'll have time to get used to playing the ideal cards that will build roads, summon troops, or help your castle defense caused. As the onslaught grows, you'll have to make more strategic decisions on your feet.

The beauty of ORX comes from its simplicity, where it's easy to learn and hard to master - not often a feat of cross-genre games. The varied approaches to victory, numerous cards, enemies, and different factions make the game immersive and entertaining. The pre-conceived campaigns give the title a bit of lore to make the elementary mechanics even more captivating than they already were.

Even though ORX won't hold players' attention forever, being more on the repetitive side, it's a well-rounded game for what it offers. Levels are enjoyable and raise the intensity factor within seconds of getting started. There's a long-standing satisfaction in playing the right cards to overcome your foes, which continues to thrill casual gamers.

If You Play Your Cards Right

If I'm being sincere, I didn't have much expectation for ORX. However, the game manipulates the best mechanics of tower defense and deck-builders to create a straightforward, seamless, and most importantly - enjoyable gameplay experience. Think Slay The Spire meets Kingdom: Two Crowns in this well-designed casual adventure.

As mentioned earlier, ORX won't hold players forever, showing its limitations after a few hours of playing. Visually it looks a bit choppy too. But we can't take away that we are genuinely impressed with how the title turned out. We'd encourage any player who enjoys casual gaming to try it, considering it's pretty easy to pick up!
