Poker Night 2

When it comes to poker games, not many can match Poker Night 2! I have played a ton of poker games and my family always plays poker over the holidays; we usually play for chocolate instead of money though. Anyway, I recently fired this up for the first time in ages and I forgot just how much fun this is and it is a damn shame that this never became some kind of long running series as it is such a fun time.

Wait, Who Made This?

One of the things that is kind of mind-blowing about Poker Night 2 is the studio behind the game. Telltale Games are the people that made this game. That is right, the studio that is known to make narrative adventure games like The Walking Dead made a poker game. However, you may not be mind blown to find out that this game has the same kind of polish and charm that all of their games do!

Pull Up A Chair

What makes Poker Night 2 so great are the people that you are playing poker with. In this game, you are joined by Sam from Sam and Max, Claptrap from Borderlands, Brock Samson from Ventura Bros, and Ash from The Evil Dead! Oh, and GLaDOS from Portal is the dealer and the one running this game. Now if that was not awesome enough, the real charm here comes from all of the conversations that these characters have as you play. It is done with that Telltale Games style and it is awesome. Granted some people may find this annoying, but I thought it was awesome and what sets this apart from all the other poker games.

Two Poker Games In One

The only poker that I know is Texas Hold Em and I would say that is the main game mode of Poker Night 2. However, you can also play another version of poker called, Omaha Hold Em. This is a fun game of poker and the AI can be pretty damn challenging to beat! At its core, I would have to say that what we have here is your standard poker game, but it is the presentation that makes it so much fun and there are a few other surprises that make this stand out.

Gaming With Friends

While you are playing Poker Night 2 to beat the other four players at the table. There are some awesome unlockable stuff that you are working towards in this game. You can unlock new tables, cards, and so on and they all are themed around different video games which is something that I thought was just so freaking cool! As well as this, if you have Borderlands 2 or Team Fortress 2 you can actually unlock stuff in this game which you can use there!

I know that when you dig really deep here what we have is another virtual representation of Texas Hold Em poker… and its Omaha variant (but who really cares about that?). However, it is the presentation, style, and humor of this game that makes it one of my all time favorite poker games. There is no way that you will not be smiling over all the banter going on here. Who ever thought that we would hear a conversation between Ash and Sam? It is fun stuff and if you want a poker game that will also make you laugh, Poker Night 2 is the game for you.

Pros:

  • I love the lineup of characters at the poker table
  • It is so much fun how GLaDOS is the dealer!
  • While it is fun this is also a rather challenging game of poker
  • It is cool how you can unlock video game themed stuff to use in the game and in other games!

Cons:

  • I guess you have to like these characters to not find their banter annoying
  • I wish that they added more characters
