Rec Room

Rec Room is one of the most expansive and enjoyable virtual reality experiences available, with an impressive selection of content to enjoy. As a social experience first and foremost, the game revolves around your custom character as you join unique servers and play simple games online. Whether played solo, casually with friends, or against players around the world, Rec Room provides a great playground for laid-back gameplay. Whether you enjoy simple sports, mind-bending puzzles, or intense shooting action, there's something for you to enjoy in Rec Room!

Main Game Features

  • Enjoy a wide variety of social game modes
  • Supports Virtual reality and traditional controls
  • Play or create custom games and lobbies

Although it was first released as a VR-only game, Rec Room has adopted traditional controls as well, letting non-VR players enjoy the game as well. There is no main story to follow or core questline to complete, as Rec Room is primarily a social experience similar to games like VrChat or Dreams. You always play from a first-person perspective, moving your character around a virtual recreation room where you can browse lobbies, queue up for matchmaking, and customize your character. You have a dorm room where you can change your clothes, play with unlocked toys, and more. As you play the game and try out different activities, you'll level up, unlocking new cosmetic options and items to use. Players have independent control over their left and right hands, allowing them to interact with objects in basic ways, such as throwing a basketball, shooting a paintball gun, and more. While the normal gamepad controls take a while to get used to, Rec Room's control scheme is simple yet intuitive, leading to some immersive gaming experiences.

Available Modes

The type of experience you have while playing Rec Room is entirely dependent on what kind of game mode you choose to play, as there is a wide variety of options available. Starting in your dorm room, you're free to queue up for a long list of custom lobbies and original content, but you can also explore the recreation center, where other online players hang out and chat. It also acts as a hub, where you can walk through doors that lead you to different types of gaming experiences. If you've ever feeling indecisive about what mode to play, there's a list of daily and weekly challenges to help you find a place to start.

Although there's a plethora of user-created game lobbies and experiences to try out, there are over a dozen modes that are packaged with the game, guaranteed to be fun and interesting. For example, there are a variety of simple sports to compete in, including dodgeball, disc golf, soccer, and bowling. If you prefer fantasy over sports, there are also four cooperative quests to complete, with players wielding swords, bows, and other medieval weapons. For those who enjoy the thrills of first-person shooting, you'll also love the choices, which range from laser tag to paintball, with the game even including a small-scale battle royale. There are also some more casual experiences to try out, such as charades, a relaxing park, and more.

No matter what kind of gaming experience you're looking for, Rec Room has something fun and quirky to try. Although you can play it in 2D with a gamepad, the game was designed for virtual reality, and its immersive gameplay reflects that. A lot of the enjoyment in Rec Room comes from the novelty and interactive nature of its simple modes, which are loads of fun to try with friends.

Even if you're not a particularly social person, you can still find enjoyment in Rec Room, it just might take a bit to find a mode that hooks you. All things considered, if you have a VR headset and you haven't tried Rec Room, you're missing out.

  • Great variety of modes
  • Fun to socialize and hang out
  • Encourages creativity and customization

  • Awkward non-VR controls
  • Not as fun solo
  • Some toxic players
