Relic Hunters Legend is a Kickstarter funded game developed by Rogue Snail, a small indie game development company based in Brazil. The Kickstarter campaign and the success of the founding process were also thanks to their previous title which was developed as a free game with an open-source code.
The campaign was quickly funded and reached 110% of the goal, so the game is now in the works and we've seen some of it. So, what's there to expect from Relic Hunters Legend? Well, let's talk about it.
What's the story?
In Relic Hunters Legend there's a touching tale of friendship, hardships, and time travel. It is the story of a mysterious time traveler that has lost their memories, and how he joins forces with a band of Relic Hunters to fight against the evil villain who stole the past.
The Relic Hunters travel across the galaxy looking for the remains of the "Keepers", an old civilization, as they try to restore the memories of the true, and now forgotten past. To do so they will explore the ruins and relics to collect the parts of the history that's now lost. The group is led by Pinkky and Jimmy, and in their travels, they meet the time traveler Seven, who has lost his memories but still can move through time.
The narrative is non-linear, and since it is an always-online game, the goal was to keep a character-driven story like a TV show. As so, there's already a written story that has full arch and development of the characters, and even a conclusion, but leaves many possibilities open for the "next season".
If you want to follow the story further on be sure to check on the website for the comics that go beyond what'll be in the game. These will also be constantly updated and there's the goal to also make an animated movie, so be sure to keep an eye out for that too.
Relic Hunters Legend is a sequel of a free-to-play, open-source, game called Relic Hunters Zero. Thanks to this previous title, the Kickstarter campaign was really popular, as Relic Hunters Zero got over a million downloads on Steam. The developers have stated that the goal with these games is to keep them free forever, with no microtransactions or any of that.
There isn’t even a “paywall” nor is it a “pay-to-win” experience. Sure, you can buy things in the game, but they won’t give any real advantage, and they make it so there are great options for every type of gamer: those who spend a lot, those who spend little, and those who don’t want to spend any money at all.
Relic Hunters Legends is set to be an interesting title, especially since they hope to include some complex RPG mechanics you don't usually see in this kind of always-online game. It looks fast, fluid, and very aesthetically pleasing. The art is great, the worldbuilding and game design are up to par with some AAA games. The 2.5 visuals combined with the action, bright colors, fast-paced action shooting of Relic Hunters Legend are looking great so far.
However it is still too early to call on it, and while it looks great at the moment, it could be promising much more than it can deliver, so as of now, only time will tell.
