They have tried bringing Resident Evil online before, but I think that they nailed it with Resident Evil Re:Verse. I was lucky enough to get the chance to play this during the closed and open beta and it really is fantastic. While it is full of fan service for Resident Evil fans, the game is so much fun, that even those with just a casual interest in the franchise will have a lot of fun with it.
Racoon City Battle Royal!
The idea of Resident Evil Re:Verse is that you play a team deathmatch game with a five-minute time limit. I am sure more modes will be added, but even if they are not even what is on offer here is shallow at the moment it is a great deal of fun. The matches can feature 4 to 6 players and the idea is that you want to score the most points so you are the one that is standing tall as the winner when the match comes to an end.
Most Of The Gang Is Here
You have a great selection of characters. There is Leon, Jill, Chris, Claire, Ada, and HUNK. Each character has their own playstyle with two weapons and special abilities that work via a cool-down meter system. You run around the map trying to kill the other players, but when a player does eventually die, it is not just game mover, respawn and play again!
Putting The Bio In Bio-Weapons!
The gimmick of Resident Evil Re:Verse is that when you die, you get to play as a creature/character from the Resident Evil franchise for a short period of time. Once you die, here, you then spawn back as your human character. As you play, you pick up these purple canisters, the more of these you have the better Bio-weapon you get to play as. For example, you can play as a Fat Molded, Hunter Gamma, Jack Baker, Nemesis, and The Tyrant. Each bio-weapon has their own special abilities that they can use and they dish out massive amounts of damage.
Forget About Your K/D Ratio!
This is a team deathmatch style of game, but it is not just about getting kill after kill. Resident Evil Re:Verse has a very interesting points based system for how it dictates a winner. You get points as you go, for kills, picking up items, and so on. You also lose points if you die. You can get extra points for things like going on a kill streak, killing the guy who killed you, ending a player's killstreak, and so on. So, even if you are dead last, a couple of kills that offer big points bonuses can get you right back into the mix.
Flipping The Pages
I love the art style that they went for in this game, it has a very comic book style of presentation and I love that. I do think that the game was clearly made with the same engine, Capcom used for the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, but that is not a bad thing as those games looked great. Seeing these characters and the iconic location in this kind of style is something I thought was really cool.
It should be said that as far as we know right now the only way that you can play Resident Evil Re:Verse is if you purchase Resident Evil Village. There is talk that this will be made available as a separate purchase (possibly even free to play?) at a later date. I have to say that I had low expectations for this, but it is just so much fun that I kept wanting to have just one more game.
Pros:
- It features many of the best Resident Evil characters
- I loved the comic book style of presentation
- Playing as a Bioweapon is a lot of fun
- The whole game is just a true joy to play
Cons:
- So far, you can only get this with a purchase of Resident Evil Village
- No word on what other game modes may be added
