Yes, new games are nice. Yes, it is exciting playing a new game for the first time. Yes, the feeling of learning a new game and getting the hang of it is almost irreplaceable.... almost. The one way to replace and relive this feeling is to simply do it again. The feeling of beating your favorite game for the first time or watching it load up is something you never forget, but it never feels quite the same as your first.
If one of these favorite games of yours happens to be the 1994 fan favorite System Shock, you are in luck. Nightdive studios has remade System Shock to the 2020 standard for fans to load in, love it, and beat it all over again.
This, of course, is the biggest thing surrounding this game’s release. Many will already know the storyline and gameplay and will be expecting something that cannot be changed too much.
The visuals and graphics, however, are exactly what bring these fans to the table. With such a memorable experience with their time playing System Shock in the 90’s, many will want to relive this mental tale they keep of their experience, and Nightdive studios is making it so they can do just that.
While System Shock was one of the impressive games back in 1994, technology and graphic immersion have come a long way since then, allowing developers to bring some of these classic games back to life like Mario, Legend of Zelda, Spyro, or Doom. Loading into these games with 2020 graphics is like loading up an entirely new game, as fans have to learn what objects now look like, the modern portrayal of their favorite characters, and get to relive their time playing more immersed then they could have ever imagined almost thirty years ago.
Even though the remake of System Shock will mainly be attracting people that already know about it, it is still a good game for new audiences to get in to, and what better way to experience it than brand new?
Playing as a hacker in deep space, you awaken from a coma to see your crewmates and entire ship be overthrown by immortal machines. A silicon overlord of all the creatures that have mauled your friends and family plan to attack Earth and remake it into their own vision of what it could be: devoid of weak flesh and bone. Using guns and technology to kill, hack, and overthrow your ship and save Earth from imminent doom, you are Earth’s only hope.
While System Shock itself is a good game, I don’t feel that remakes earn a whole lot of brownie points due to the lack of originality. Unless it is extremely well done and well needed, it is hard to get extreme amounts of hype out of remakes. Because of this, I feel System Shock (the remake) is capped around a 7/10.
