Sapiens

Plenty of games are developed by small indie teams, and this has been made more common with the years. Especially thanks to the rise in popularity of indie games, as we know, some of the most popular games among the fans are indie games. But what is even more impressive is that there are games developed by just a single person, and such is the case for this game. Sapiens is a game developed entirely by one person, Dave Frampton. But is it possible to build an entire game just with a team of one? Well, we've seen this happening in the past, and it has somehow worked before. So, let's see what Sapiens is all about!

About the game

Sapiens is a game based on the idea of creating your own civilization, basically from zero, as you shape and create your world. You get to see how they evolve and build the towns, even create industries and have complete control of how the world is established. From the first stone of every factory, to the way the roads are distributed, everything is up to you. As you may guess, this game also has the player working through the breakthroughs in civilization and technologies. Expand your civilization by getting the technologies and materials required. The world is yours to conquer and discover, and since it is a procedurally generated world, there's a lot of work to do here. In theory, the game map could be even bigger than earth itself, or at least that's what the developer says.

Gameplay

But you're not always an outsider, you can explore the land and walk among all the people you've been managing throughout the ages. Finding the new resources and investigating, doing everything by hand if you so wish to do. This gives the game a great deal of freedom and lets you experience the world in ways no other game will. The game also has a very interesting twist: the AI. It's pretty smart, and once again shows how much the developer knows about this business. The game starts off with a single AI, but as you progress, you'll find other civilizations coming into play. And these AI's aren't just another resource, they actually do their own things.

You can interact with them or even fight against each other, and sometimes it's best to avoid any kind of interaction because they might be incredibly dangerous and strong. But hey, this is all part of building a civilization. Another civilization simulation?

When we mention that this game is a civilization simulation, probably some of the games that jump to mind are Sid Meier's Civilization V or Age of Empires. But this is more linked to development and creation in a more omnipotent way. If you want to try out something like that, then this is the game to grab. It's a little bit complex, but it offers a great experience and if you're looking for that type of game, I'd definitely recommend it to you.

It was really hard to find a good reason to start up another civilization simulator after the release of Civilization VI, but Sapiens offers a different approach. Instead of focusing on history, in this game YOU make history and shape the world while you're at it. Of course, visually and mechanically this game is much less developed, but it's still a pretty solid game, especially when you consider it was developed by a single person.

Pros:

  • Procedural generation of the world and cities
  • Interesting tech tree with plenty of options

Cons:

  • Gameplay is a little bit too slow-paced
