One thing that the gang from Mystery Incorporated and the gaming community have in common is the repetitive asking of “Scooby-Doo, where are you?” The hit 70s cartoon has made many adaptions with spin-offs, mini-series, toys, plushes, and even some time on the big screen, but they have not had the same success with in making a playable version of the beloved Scooby-Doo universe. From what has attempted, however, Scooby-Doo! Unmasked is the best game adaptation we have seen of this yet. A2M developed this game for mystery lovers with the help of THQ productions making it a known hit among its audiences.

Game Design

The game was obviously made with their young audience in mind, as it should have been. The opening cinematic of the game mimics that of the show down to a point, making fans engaged in the similarity and giving the feeling of being immersed in the show they love so much, instead of just watching from the sidelines this time.

With little details going a long way, A2M kept this in mind, when transitioning the theme music and cut scene seamlessly in a spooky atmosphere where the player and their character resides. Without a cut that stands out, the developer did a great job of making the game feel less of a game and more of a gateway to the Scooby-Doo universe.

The art style is surprisingly good for 2005, especially to be a kid’s game, as these usually get much less attention and effort. The cartoon style characters, and environment is not lost, but only embraced in this game. As many developers attempt to make games as realistic as possible, A2M focused on the cartoon aspect of Scooby-Doo and embraced the visuals it already was loved for.

Gameplay

With each episode the Mystery Inc. gang finds themselves in a new place with a new mystery, and Scooby-Doo! Unmasked is no different. After the cut to gameplay from the intro scene, the player is put into the mystery that Fred’s cousin, Jed, and his work crew have gone missing. The player is tasked with taking their character and figuring out just what happened. The game offers customization on each character with suits that unlock special abilities, making it exciting with each new thing and no member of the gang left out. The controls are very simple that any kid can grasp them, but still find the tasks challenging enough to make the game fun.

As they solve portions of the mystery and cutscenes reveal clues, famous voices like that of Adam West will make their appearance, making Scooby-Doo! Unmasked that much more immersive and ahead of the line over other Scooby-Doo games that have tried to make their mark.

The game is obviously nothing like modern games and any “gamer” would have a hard time finding it enjoyable with the bugs prevalent in a fifteen year old game designed for children, but a kid who loves the number one mystery solving great dan can still find plenty of joy in Scooby-Doo! Unmasked.

7

By today’s standards, the game would not be able to compete, but for the time, this definitely had some potential and good things going for it. Because of that and the fact it can still be enjoyed by kids now-a-days, I give the game a 7/10.
