Military war games are a dime a dozen at the moment, especially those that delve into more modern combat situations. However, one title that has gained a lot of interest since it was first announced is Six Days in Fallujah. This title, developed by Highwire Games and Atomic Games, offers a pretty interesting take on the Iraq War.
Promising it offer something far more substantial than the usual war game fare when it comes to portraying the narrative of combat itself, can this title live up to the lofty expectations set out for it when it releases in the end of 2022? The Iraq War from a different perspective
For most people, the Battle of Fallujah is regarded as one of the most damning moments within the Iraq War. Over a six-day period, US Marines took part in a massive battle that has become one of the landmark moments of the entire ‘War on Terror’. This game looks to try and portray that experience, though there are already disputes over just how appropriate something like this would be seen to be.
With that in mind, the game has been in development for many years – development was first slated for 2020 – and the game is now set to be released by Highwire Games, a set of developers made up of former Halo and Destiny developers. The game itself is expected to arrive in 2022, and it is hard to say what it will offer beyond the usual tactical shooter style that has been covered so many times in the past.
One thing to note about this game is that it does bring some interesting ideas. Often time, shooters are very barebones with how much they delve into the actual combat and the incidents that surround a military mission. This game at least looks more likely to try and be serious about the impact of the Iraq War. How well it manages to sell this story, though, remains to be seen.
Controversial, and with good reason (8/10)
While to some it might be a modern take on games like Full Spectrum Warrior, it would be hard to say too much about Six Days in Fallujah until it is actually released. The development for the game has been controversial to say the least, and a lack of any major developmental reports across 2021 has seen some speculate if the game will ever even release.
The decision to bring the game to life is also seen as controversial given the fact that the Iraq War is such a controversial topic in its own right. While the developers likely have good intentions, it remains to be seen how well those intentions will actually play out.
With such little substantive detail about the game outside of its setting, too, it is hard to make any major calls at how good it is actually going to be. For now, the only real knowledge we have about Six Days in Fallujah is that it will be a recreation of one of the most controversial moments of one of the most controversial wars in modern history.
- Interesting idea that might break away from the usual modern warfare ideas
- Tactical shooter with some innovations that look to be interesting for players
- Controversial setup and theme could be uncomfortable for veterans and victims
- Perhaps lacks the depth and the polish hoped for when the game was first announced
