Today we are checking out SpongeBob HeroPants for the Nintendo 3DS. The game is also available for other platforms too, but from what I have seen it is mostly the same no matter what you are playing it on. One of the strange things about SpongeBob is that there are a ton of games based on him and his pals and they have been coming out since the days of the original PlayStation! Even stranger is that I would actually say that there are way more good than bad SpongeBob games out there!
Heroes In A Half Sponge!
See what I did there? The plot of SpongeBob HeroPants is kind of tied into the movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water, well very loosely! It features SpongeBob and his friends having to go and find the pages of a book in order to save the world! The movie was a lot of fun and getting to see all of the characters once again in their superhero get ups was something that I thought was a lot of fun. If you like the crazy antics of SpongeBob and the rest of the guys from Bikini Bottom, you will get a kick out of this.
Getting Your Superhero On!
The gameplay of SpongeBob HeroPants is pretty basic stuff. I would say it is best described as a third person beat-em-up style of game. You get to play as the main cast and while each character can attack and use burgers for a ranged attack. The real fun is when you fill up the super meter and you can transform into their super alter ego. The gameplay is pretty simple, but there is a fair bit of charm here. It is the kind of game that is great for kids or someone who wants something that is light and not too taxing on the old brain if you know what I am saying.
That Bikini Bottom Style
For a 3DS game, SpongeBob HeroPants is pretty solid in the presentation department. This is a game that looks pretty similar no matter what you are playing it on so it is great the 3DS port is able to hold its own. The game has that classic SpongeBob style in terms of the visuals and the sound as well. There are some fun animated cut scenes and it has some excellent voice acting. I like all of the one liners that are said during gameplay, even if some things do repeat a bit too often. To be fair, that kind of thing always happens with games like this!
It would be so easy to just write a game like SpongeBob HeroPants off as shovelware. However, I think there is a fair bit of charm here and if you get a kick out of the crazy antics of SpongeBob and his friends, you will find some fun here. It is not the deepest experience at all, but it is probably far better than you would be expecting it to be. While basic, it is the perfect game if you want something where you can turn your brain off and just have some fun.
- It serves as a fun follow up to the movie
- It has some great SpongeBob style presentation
- The voice acting is great
- The game may be very basic, but there is still some fun to be had here
- There is not much of a challenge here at all
- I would bet that most people will play this once and probably never go back to it
