Spongebob has had many video game adaptations over the years, and with a show so popular with children, it’s no wonder why. And Truth or Square might be among the best of them. Sure, some might call it repetitive or boring— but those would be adults. Considering it’s a game made for kids, it does a pretty good job. It will keep children entertained for hours and would make a great gift for any kids in your life.
The sponge’s new story
There isn’t much story to this game, but what there is holds up well. Spongebob has been entrusted with the Krabby Patty formula, but he lost it— and can’t remember where it is, because he’s too sad. So his friends gather together to help him remember some of his happiest memories, so he can hopefully find the formula again. The game takes the form of reliving these happy memories. But the evil Plankton is also involved, filling Spongebob’s memories with enemies like robots. And this is where the action kids love comes in.
Fighting through the stages
Truth or Square is set up very much like a classic side scrolling platformer: think Cool Spot or even Contra. Spongebob moves across the scene battling robots with his arsenal of attacks. The controls and movement are all fairly easy to get down, so it shouldn’t be a challenging game for kids. As long as they can remember at least one attack button, they should be good.
But the game isn’t meant to be challenging, it’s meant to entertain kids who love Spongebob. And it’s got just the right tools to do that: bright colors, funny characters, and interesting sounds. It’s got everything a Spongebob-loving kid would need to have a fantastic time. As a platformer in general, nothing really sticks out about Truth or Square. Its moves and mechanics have all been done before. But the visuals and characters are what make this game special, and what make it good for kids.
The colors are bright, the environments fun, and the action simple. It’s got all the famous Spongebob characters that make the show great. So as a game for kids, Truth or Square is pretty good. As a game for adults, well, you can probably find something better.
