Super Bomberman R is the 33rd contribution to a very long running series. In this game, the goal is to use bombs to manipulate enemies, and power-ups to buff yourself. It’s a game that is easy to understand but could take years to perfect.

The game offers 6 worlds to journey through to complete the game’s story mode, as well as 8 bomberman heroes to choose from when defeating the bosses.

Multiplayer at its Best

It’s very evident that multiplayer is one of the most developed aspects of this game. Super Bomberman R allows you to play with up to 8 players at any time. The game even allows others to jump in mid-game, so if one person is struggling to defeat a boss, help is on the way. The game is available on a number of different platforms, but even on the tiny Switch, its easy to add friends if you have enough controllers available to support them.

Camera Angle Needs Work

No game is perfect, and Super Bomberman R’s weak link is probably the camera angle. The game does its best to add excitement to action scenes by zooming in when someone performs a critical shot. Unfortunately, when this happens it can cause players to lose sight of the enemy. Although the zooming-in aspect to the camera angle is well meant, it can make fighting multiplayer or even against a boss more difficult than it needs to be.

3 Different Modes

The game offers three different modes, including the all new “Grand Prix” mode. In Grand Prix, players must work in teams to be declared the best team in the universe. Players must steal “Balloms” from each other, and get them safely back to their own bases. The game also features “Story Mode” which includes anime style cut scenes that tell the story of the different worlds the players is jumping through. The story mode has 50 stages, which gives you several hours of entertainment all on its own.

Finally, there’s a Battle Mode which is a generic multiplayer free-for-all for players to enjoy.

Graphics are So-So

Super Bomberman R has never been known for its fantastic graphics, but even games like Ponpu which spun off from the Super Bomberman series has much better graphics. It’s likely because this port had a small team to get it moved over, but especially in the different battle modes you can see even the most basic graphics seem to be strained.

If you’re a fan of the Super Bomberman series, than playing this game will be a fun addition for you. If you’re looking at this game purely to see if you’d like the series however, it may be better to choose one of the better examples in the series first.

This game is a riot and fun to play with others, but it’s flaws can cause the game to be more difficult than it needs to be.

Pros:

  • Multiplayer is very well done
  • Plenty of content

Cons:

  • Poor graphics
  • Camera angles can cause trouble

Game Reviews

Super Bomberman R takes a classic gameplay formula and spices it up with a lengthy story mode, two-player co-op, and hectic multiplayer battles. Controlling one of many bomb-wielding characters, you must use strategy and power-ups to blow up your opponents with colorful explosions. The game tries to reignite this beloved franchise with colorful graphics and an anime-style story, but it comes up short in many ways. While it's lots of fun to play with friends and contains some pretty exciting bosses, Super Bomberman R works best if you're already a fan of the franchise.

Main Game Features

  • Blast enemies and friends in maze-like arenas
  • Over 50 stages to complete
  • Fight your friends in nearly 20 battlegrounds

Story

One of the main modes in Super Bomberman R is the story mode, which contains dozens of levels to complete. In the story, an evil villain known as Emperor Buggler, along with his team of five robot underlings, is attempting to take over the galaxy. Elsewhere, the eight Bomberman brothers struggle to come together as a team, with their personalities clashing during early training. However, when the brothers intercept a broadcast from Emperor Buggler, who reveals his plans to dominate the Starry Sky Nebula, the brothers head out to prevent the Emperor from pulling off his secret plan. Most of the story in Super Bomberman R is told through anime-style cutscenes, which can be a bit boring at times. It's fun to see all the unique personalities of the eight Bomberman brothers, and Emperor Buggler is an intriguing villain, but the story is uneventful. If anything, the story serves as an easy way to connect five different thematic worlds, but it's not very engaging. Luckily, Bomberman is not a franchise that's known for its thrilling lore, so it's nice to see the developers try to flesh out the narrative at least.

Gameplay

There's something pure and exciting about the gameplay in the Bomberman series, which is something that Super Bomberman R does a good job replicating. You won't have to learn any tough controls or worry about a learning curve, as the game only uses one thumbstick and one button. Playing from a top-down view, you must navigate a maze-like level full of enemies, using your bombs to defeat them all. Bombs can also destroy certain obstacles, which often opens new paths and power-ups to use. Most of the content can be found within the story mode, which has 50 stages that can be played in single-player or two-player co-op. Each of the game's five worlds ends with an exciting boss fight, which are the highlight of the story.

Even though the campaign might not be as fun as something like Bomberman 64, the multiplayer in Super Bomberman R is lots of fun. You can enjoy some hectic bomb-filled competition with up to four players locally or eight players using networked systems or the online service. Blasting your friends and foes never gets old, as the classic gameplay is always rewarding. However, the game lacks modes and there are not enough customization options when compared to other games in the series. This is disappointing, as the core gameplay is fun and can lead to some really exciting moments.

Conclusion

Super Bomberman R is a decent entry in the franchise, but it trips over itself and doesn't have much in the way of replayability. The campaign is a solid mixture of fun matches and cool boss fights, even if the story is so-so. Multiplayer is fun, especially against a full group of friends, but the lack of player and mode customization is disappointing.

6

In short, Super Bomberman R is fun, but don't expect to be playing it for more than a few hours.

Pros

  • Fun and hectic gameplay
  • Easy controls and basic concept
  • Multiplayer is fun

Cons

  • Mediocre story
  • Gameplay lacks depth
  • Not a lot of customization
