The fight against Skynet continues in Terminator: Resistance. A game that will probably be the closest we’ll ever get to an interactive Terminator film, this title puts you in the shoes of a soldier waging war against the machines in the future. You know, Terminator stuff.
With its impressive visuals and satisfying gunplay, Terminator: Resistance might be one of the finest movie games I’ve ever played. While some aspects of the game’s design might feel a bit dated, there’s no denying that this is the kind of game that you can play for hours on end.
Fight for the Past
Resistance takes place in the middle of the Future War: a period in which the humans are finally dealing decisive blows to the machines and Skynet. For Terminator fans, this might be one of the best games — and products — the franchise has ever released, as it provides some valuable backstory for many mysteries in The Terminator series.
The entire game feels as if Metro 2033 had robots instead of mutants to fight against. However, the levels are much more open-ended than the ones in Metro, allowing players to navigate the ruins of the future world in search for clues and tidbits of lore.
Crawling Machines
One issue I had with Terminator: Resistance’s design is that the game takes its time to get into the action. While this would be great for a film, it might not be the fast-paced first-person shooter experience that some players might have been looking for.
Still, the plot and characters are impeccably presented, delivering an experience that perfectly captures the tone and style of the film franchise. There are also some great examples of environmental storytelling here and there that help the world feel more alive.
For the most part, the game is as addictive as they come. However, there’s one area where Terminator: Resistance really struggles: bugs.
Glitches Galore
Besides the usual map and enemy recycling, there’s a feeling of shallowness that permeates some areas of Terminator: Resistance. While the visuals look decent — and some of the lighting can look straight gorgeous — the animations and the overall presentation doesn’t exactly scream AAA title.
Bugs and glitches are also a common occurrence in this game. The best thing you can do is save and save frequently. In a game where the machines are your most lethal enemy, it only makes sense that you’d have to be careful of your PC malfunctioning in the middle of the game.
All in all, if you can look past the technical mishaps, Terminator: Resistance is an enjoyable and deeply atmospheric experience that Terminator fans are sure to love.
Terminator: Resistance has its fair share of glitches and unappealing visuals, but the rest of the presentation turns this game into the perfect love letter for Terminator fans.
