Undoubtedly the renaissance is one of the most inspiring periods in history. But just as inspiring it was to all kinds of sciences and art back then, it's still very inspiring for video games. Not only games like Assassin's Creed 2 go for this, but also The Guild game series. The Guild 3 is once again centered in Europe around the 1400s' and has many similarities with the previous games in the series. But how's this game different from its predecessors, and is it any better? Well, let's talk about it.
Politics and judgment
The Guild is at its core a management game, and there's a lot of politics involved and all the stuff related to it. The political positions are based on a pyramidal structure and they follow a very simple order where a department is under the commands of the one on top and so on. Usually, there are some trials in the game too, where three judges will give out their verdict on a crime and the final result will be the average verdict.
However, the biggest change here is that popular opinion takes on a more important role now. And while they may not rule the land, as the society evolves, the public popularity affects more and more the flow of judgments. This also reflects itself on the policymaking and the popularity of the leaders in the elections and more.
The power in your hands
There are plenty of powerful positions in politics divided into different levels, but even if you're just elected for a single charge you can move your influence in the other ones. You can even put a family member in a different role of politics to help you move some influences too. Keep in mind though that popular influence is really important. If the public likes you you're alright, if they don't then be ready for the consequences.
Depending on the role you're elected as the gameplay changes a lot and the way it affects popular opinion. But not only that, but it will also open up a world of possibilities to keep ascending to a higher level of authority.
Once you rise to the top of authority, you can choose how you'll rule. But keep in mind that it may not be really popular to rule with an iron fist. And now that popular opinion is in the spotlight, it would be wise to keep them happy.
The Guild 3 is definitely a step in the right direction for the series, with many interesting add ons and new mechanics that make the world feel much more alive. The interactions, society-building, and even the AI have improved a lot. The NPCs have adaptive behavior which makes it all the more realistic than ever before. It has a lot of great replay value and they've generally improved the game in basically every way possible.
