If you enjoy co-op sci-fi horror then you might wish to take a look at a new release by OnSkull Games, Unsafe. The title has built up some interesting feedback in a short time, offering a co-op experience for up to four players. You are stuck on a space station that has been shut down in terms of operations, and you need to find out what caused the blackout and why. As you might imagine, this involves trying to survive in a stressful atmosphere, collect the data about the issue, and then get yourself back to safety. Throughout, though, you need to make sure you don’t get caught by the pursuers who are involved in the shutdown of the space station.
Classic sci-fi horror built to scare
First off, fans of the game series FEAR might recognise some of the atmospheric moments within this game. You make your way through the Black Monolith, and you and your team are responsible for setting up the station.
However, your team has woken up in the station from cryostasis with one clear problem: something has gone wrong. Something has sabotaged the space station. Now, you need to find out what happened whilst you were in stasis and work your way through the ship.
You need to find a way to break through security systems, to collect data, and to face off against the numerous dangers that you are up against. You need to keep your wits about you, work as a team, and avoid the numerous threats that now exist on the ship.
The atmospheric nature of the game is excellent, really creating something that will make you think as you work through the various sectors of the ship. There are numerous threats that you need to work through, including alien species that can turn up and make your resumption of the stations processes even harder.
Dark, moody, and terrifying (6.5/10)
While this is still in Early Access, it is easy to see the potential of Unsafe shining bright underneath. It’s an interesting game, as you need to decide to help comrades or run for your life.
You need to work together, too, as there is so much to do and so many opportunities for something to go wrong. Will you stay back to help a teammate, or move on to the next objective and risk leaving them alone to die?
With numerous tools to work with and an atmosphere that feels akin to something like the Alien movies, this is a very daunting game. While it is still quite barebones, the potential is obvious; if Unsafe keeps getting the love and attention it has so far, it could become a very popular multiplayer survival game in the future.
