Are you ready to win big on the World Poker Tour? This is available on many different platforms, but the version I am familiar with is the one that came out for the PSP, the PlayStation 2 is probably the better known version, but from what I understand, each version of this game is pretty much the same. This is a great game to play if you consider yourself a bit of a pro poker player. You can play against real pros and not have to worry about losing money, your dignity, your home, or anything else!
Taking On The Pros!
I will admit that I am not someone that is fully familiar with the pro poker scene, but I have seen it when flipping through the channels. World Poker Tour is officially licensed and lets you take part in the big poker tournaments that happen all over the world. They have tried to be as authentic as possible by having you start at the bottom in the amateur ranks before trying to become the ultimate poker pro with millions of dollars in the bank. The career mode if we can call it that is pretty cool and makes you feel like you are part of the pro circuit.
Just Like On TV
I know that I just said that I am not super familiar with the way World Poker Tour is on TV, but from what I have seen, the team behind the game has been very faithful with the look of the game. It has the same kind of presentation as pro poker does on TV and they have recreated the famous casinos very well and there are even some pro poker players that are featured on TV and I even recognized a couple of them. There is also commentary here which does repeat more than I would like, but it sounds like they have taken clips from the TV broadcast and spliced it into the game and that is pretty awesome and goes a long way to making the game feel more legit.
Hit Me!
If you have played Texas Hold Em style poker before, World Poker Tour is going to be a game that you can get into right away. You start by creating your character and from there you start your poker champ journey. The AI starts off pretty forgiving and they are easy to beat, this is great for those of you new to this game and who need to learn the ropes.
Although, they do have many accessibility options that will allow you to change the difficulty to something that suits you. In all, I was impressed at the speed the games moved along, if only the load times matched this! Seriously, this game has some brutal load times.
If you like poker, you will probably like World Tour Poker. However, if you have never been someone that enjoys playing or watching poker, chances are this is going to be a game that does not click with you at all. I like to play poker with my buddies (for fun, not money, heck we usually play for stuff like Snickers and Mars bars) and this was a fun way for me to play a higher stakes kind of poker without there being any actual high stakes. As I said, my review is based on the PSP version, but they all look pretty similar to what I have seen.
Pros:
- If you like to play virtual poker, you will like this
- It tries to be just like the pro poker you see on TV
- The game looks far better than you would think a poker game would
- The games are pretty fast-paced
Cons:
- The game has some pretty long hard times
- If you are not a fan of poker, this will not win you over
