When most people feel lonely, they look for friends or reconnect with family. In this slightly creepy puzzler, you’ll be addressing your feelings of loneliness by searching for body parts and building a new creature out of them. Slightly creepy, slightly cozy, Birth mixes it all to become an intriguing new game.
Set in a city landscape with monsters instead of people, it seems relatively normal to find someone’s spleen sitting on a bus seat here. Because you are so lonely, you don’t mind looking for all these strange things in this strange world.
Beautiful Artwork
Birth has a beautiful, unique art style. The game is certainly creepy looking, sort of like Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge, but in a more soft, cartoon style. It feels like a mixture of creepy and cozy. The music that accompanies it isn’t creepy but does have that same cozy feel to it.
Together, the artwork and sound make it feel like a soft and relaxing game you can curl up with after a stressful day.
Physics Based Puzzles
There’s a huge variety of puzzles in this game. In the short play throughs available at events and on the trailer, Birth doesn’t appear repetitive at all. Sometimes you’ll need to try and put together a jig-saw puzzle, sometimes it will be a puzzle where you need to pull pins to make liquid fall in a certain way.
All of the puzzles have a weird but oddly gentle creepy vibe to them. Although you are working with eyeballs and bones and livers, it feels comfortable and even heartwarming at times.
Making a Creature
The items you find during your hunt through the city all have a purpose. They are the pieces you will be working with to make your own critter, Frankenstein style. You may find yourself adding bowns, sewing together skin, or figuring out where an organ needs to go for the benefit of the creature.
A cute storyline
Although it is more focused on puzzles, there’s also an overarching story to this game. The theme is loneliness. You are lonely, in a new city with no friends. With no one to talk to and share your problems with, you lovingly make a new friend to share this creepy world with.
Although making a new creature seems a lot more difficult than talking to your co-workers or something, it is overall a very cute storyline that makes sense in the world painted by the developers.
This is a refreshing, original puzzler. The cute storyline has enough substance to give meaning behind your actions, the creepy yet cozy style is unique among puzzle games. Best of all, the puzzles flow together and make sense. Even if you struggle with puzzle games and normally find them difficult, you may find this one easy to work on without getting distracted, frustrated or confused.
This game is highly recommended if you like puzzles, creepy games, or just looking for something to entertain you on a slow weekend.
