Innovating in the RPG world is really hard, there are so many games in this genre that you'd think it is all said and done. And as rough as it can be, if you can't find something entirely new to do, it's time to do things differently. Implementing some things that have already been done into a game, and then giving it an interesting twist can be the key to having some of the most interesting games. The game we're talking about here is called Blacksmith Bay, and you can kinda see where things are going from the title there. But there's much more than that, so let's talk about Blacksmith Bay and see what it's all about.
About the game
Blacksmith Bay is a title that combines managing your own business of metalwork and adding some RPG action elements. Not only are you going to build the forge of your dreams and create all the best weapons, armors, and tools, but you’ll also have to go out and do the dirty work. Explore dungeons, complete quests, and go on great adventures. Going directly to the source of the materials is the right way to get exactly the ones you need.
Keep in mind that going on missions and gathering rare materials can be quite troublesome, so make sure you earn good profit by turning them into great, exotic pieces in your forge. There’s a world to explore, and a forge to maintain, so make sure you balance your adventures and your job well.
Explore and do business in the different locations, from Port Pleasant to the mines, the world is yours to take on, but of course, always come back to your forge to do your art.
An interesting experience
Most fantasy RPG games allow you to forge your weapons, take Skyrim for example, there are many forges around the map where you can bring materials and get your weapons forged. Maybe you can even forge them yourself and sell them afterward, but it's not as common to see a game where you get to own your own forge. In Blacksmith Bay, you have to keep your business going, and that's what takes you on so many different adventures.
A more direct comparison for this game would be something like Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, which is another game that has the player own an item shop and also goes on different dungeons to get new items to sell.
Blacksmith Bay is an interesting game as it somehow allows you to experience at first hand how life is for your average NPC blacksmith. We've all wondered how the life of the NPC could be in most RPGs and nowhere do we kinda get to be one, and that's great. At the same time, we have to note that the gameplay is quite solid, and we get to play two completely different experiences in just one game. The business mechanics are pretty good, and the RPG exploration part is also alright.
- The business part is great
- There's a lot to do
- A lot of quests
- Big map
- The action part is just alright
- Not enough customization
