Bomb Rush Cyberfunk

What is the purest form of art? Well, as art in and of itself is subjective, many people will have different answers. However, a popular one is that graffiti and street art are the truest of art forms. Games in the past have paid tribute to this by making bombing spots or street art a key part of their game or at least a mechanic. However, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk aims to embody the culture of the tagger and give players a gaming experience that is like no other.

While this is a pretty unique experience, we would say that this game does have some similarities to games like, Airblade, Sunset Overdrive, Crazy Taxi, Mark Echo’s Getting Up, Infamous 2 and Kingspray Graffiti VR. This game is a burst of colour and high speed fun but is this game a novelty, or the real deal? We find out in our review of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.

Cathartic Chaos

First, lets begin with the gameplay for this title. The best way that we can describe this game, is a high octane, stunt and combo challenge which you can play as seriously or as care free as you like. The main goal is to roam the streets, bomb local spots with glorious graffiti, get your name up in the lights and have a lot of fun doing it. The games free roaming feature allows you to work out how the mechanics work for yourself, flow within the bustling streets, grind, jump and freestyle to your hearts content and of course, paint the streets.

Then once you are acclimatised with this new world, you are tasked with ruling the streets and battling for territory. The best way to describe this competitive mode is by comparing to the likes of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater’s graffiti mode or perhaps the game Splatoon. It’s essentially a free for all where you battle for rep and to own the city. It’s high stakes, fast paced and a hell of a lot of fun.

Then lastly, let us focus on the style of this game. The title has that same cartoon, hand drawn and very out there vibe that games such as Crazy Taxi, Sunset Overdrive and SSX Tricky made their own many years ago. Yet, this game still manages to carve out its own personality, it’s own unique storyline and a world with fun characters which makes playing worthwhile.

The Verdict

Overall, we can’t heap too much praise on this title as truthfully, it doesn’t do anything all that new. The art style is borrowed, the gameplay is heavily influenced by the extreme sports genre and the game modes are again, influenced by existing properties.
