With a name like CORPSE FACTORY, you'd think we'd be getting some uber-violent first-person shoot-em-up. Something where gameplay consists of the goriest ways to tear your enemies apart. Well, the reality is that there are corpses. Still, the premise is slightly more narrative-driven than that barbaric arcade game, as the title suggests.
CORPSE FACTORY is a visual novel based on the idea of being able to request someone's death online, following all the mayhem that ensues. The pull here is that we seem to have a visual novel that's created purely for the rich storyline rather than just consecutive lewd imagery. Therefore, this title has suddenly built an aura of intrigue around it! Let's dive into the mysterious world of CORPSE FACTORY.
Another Day on the Production Line
What peaks interest in getting into CORPSE FACTORY is the disclaimers we're given about the themes. We'd usually have warnings of suggestive adult content, sexual in nature, and lewd in every possible sense. If you were a visual novel fan, you'd be surprised to see that the game warns of adult content for entirely different reasons. Violence, gore, suicide, depression, and anxiety. You feel this game might be a bit heavy on the mind.
Alas, the intrigue has pulled us in. There's nothing mechanically different about the game other than the standard elements of a visual novel - clicks, choices, and whatnot. However, what stands out from the beginning is that it's a lot more refined than that traditionally hastily put-together game. I guess it would have to be to do this terrifying novel justice.
We can't go into the narrative too much for obvious reasons. But we can reveal the premise and the core of the storyline. A website pops up that allows people to request the death of someone they hate, where the victim receives a photograph hours before they meet their inevitable end. You'll follow the story of uncovering the mysteries behind the deaths and website.
So finally, is the narrative as gripping as the premise suggests? CORPSE FACTORY is outstanding compared to the trove of other average visual novels. Yes, there are moments of madness, things that will disturb you, but ultimately - it's a well-written story that's bound to keep your attention from start to finish.
Digital Death Protocol
Does the question remain if CORPSE FACTORY is worth a go for gamers that aren't inclined to visual novels? It's hard to say because of the heavy nature of the narrative. Still, in all honesty, the storyline is well-written and stretches the boundaries of the genre. So yes, CORPSE FACTORY is worth a playthrough.
You can't expect that same mechanical prowess of similar themed Death Note: Kira Game. However, there are still enjoyable features of CORPSE FACTORY. It won't take you too long to finish, and you'll likely be left pondering some of the themes and prose of the title. One of the better visual novels this year, but still a classic graphic novel outside of the more robust narrative.
