The second revival of a PlayStation 2 classic, Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound offers western players the chance to play one of the coolest tactical RPGs ever developed. Part of a legendary series of tactics-based games, this title is yet more proof that classic games, when properly done, can remain fun for decades after their original release.
This reimagining of the original game is not just a port of the PSP enhanced edition of the game, but it also adds some new features that will make the game feel new even for returning players.
Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound tells the story of Zetta: an Overlord of the netherworld who has lost his kingdom and barely keeps his life after a terrible incident. The worst part of it all is that the destruction of the netherworld was caused by none other than Zetta himself – so now the Overlord must try to restore his world using an ancient magical tome.
The original Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome was conceived as a spin-off to the Disgaea series, so players can expect much of the same style of humor and tactical combat that made that series so popular in the first place. While some might find that comedy style somewhat cheap, there’s no denying that there’s a certain charm in the series and its over-the-top cartoony tone.
This version of the game is not based on the PS2 original, but rather on the PSP enhanced edition of Makai Kingdom. This version includes an alternate story that complements the rest of the story, starring Zetta’s daughter from the future, Petta.
If you’re looking for a tactical RPG that has zany characters galore and a funny plot that never takes itself too seriously, then Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound might be the one you were looking for.
Plan To Win
Veterans of Phantom Brave and Disgaea: Hour of Darkness might find the gameplay in Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound quite familiar. Much of the game plays like a visual novel, with the tactical encounters being the core of the gameplay segments of Makai Kingdom.
A difference from the rest of the Disgaea series in terms of tactics and units is that there are vehicles in Makai Kingdom. These units serve as a way to traverse the battlefield much faster, but they also provide some improved firepower for when battles get rough.
In a satisfyingly modern twist, most of the maps in the game are randomly generated, ensuring that repeat encounters feel fresh no matter how much you play the game. These random maps also mean that players will have to adapt to a variety of battle situations fast, with improvisation being a core necessity in most encounters.
All in all, Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound offers players the chance to play one of the best tactical RPGs of the PS2 era in modern hardware – with all the bells and whistles that come with new hardware. High resolutions and cloud saves are now the norm, and this version of Makai Kingdom makes full use of those improvements to deliver the best in tactical RPG experiences.
Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound is a fresh take on an old classic that still feels as new as it did years ago – even if the overall tone of the game might not be to everyone’s taste.

- Randomly generated maps keep things fresh on repeat playthroughs
