Crash Dive 2

I will admit that I was a tad apprehensive about playing Crash Dive 2. I love submarines, they are so cool, but I have found that submarine themed games are very hit or miss, and those that tend to be more sim based lose me with how complex they are. I thought for sure that this was going to be some kind of deep sim, but what we have here is something that I would classify more as an action game than a sim game. Of course, while this made it much more appealing to me, I am sure those who do prefer their games to be more “sim like” may find what is on offer here a tad on the simplistic side.

Prowling The South Pacific!

The point of Crash Dive 2 is that we are in charge of a badass Gato Class Submarine and we are prowling around the South Pacific trying to take down any enemy subs, ships, bases, and planes that we feel are dangerous and a threat to our way of life. It is your typical “war story” that you would expect in a game like this, but I liked what they were doing here and was invested enough to keep on hunting the high seas!

Get Ready For Action

I get why some people who are really into submarines get a kick out of sims that let you control all of the instruments and stuff that makes a sub work. Crash Dive 2 is not quite that in-depth, but that works in its favor. You just have to pretty much set your sights on a target, watch a bar fill up and then you can let loose. It all happens at a fast-pace which is why if feel that this is far more like an action game than a sim one. There are various settings that you can tinker with if you want to make things more challenging or even easier for yourself.

As Much Control As You Want

I want to touch back on the accessibility things that Crash Dive 2 has going on. While I was more than happy to just move around the ocean, blasting anything that got in my way, and had a great time doing so. There are other deeper things that you can turn on if you want such as a tech upgrade tree, crew management, and weather effects. You can leave most of this to the AI which is what I did, but it is there if you want it and I am sure it will make the game feel more sim like for those that need that more challenging gameplay in their submarine game.

Plenty of Stuff To Destroy

While I liked the campaign which features a whole host of missions for you to partake in. Crash Dive 2 has a whole lot of content for you to get into here. You can take part in random missions thanks to the mission generator which is what I liked best. You select this mode, and it throws a random mission your way where you need to destroy this, protect that, or whatever, and then you do it. It makes this a great pick up and play game for me and it makes this a game that I will probably come back to quite regularly.

8.5

I know that some people may see a submarine game and just feel like this is not for them and I get that. However, Crash Dive 2 is the rare exception where I feel like it plays enough like an action game that anyone can get into it. Also, on the flip side of this, you can make it much more sim like if you desire. I highly recommend that you give this one a try as it is a game that truly did take me by surprise.

Pros:

  • I loved how the game was more action than sim focused
  • There are plenty of accessibility options to make it harder or easier for you
  • The campaign is a lot of fun
  • It has a random mission generator which adds tons of replay value to the game

Cons:

  • If submarines are not something you think are cool, this may not grab your attention
  • The sim stuff here makes the game less fun in my opinion
