Device 6 is a text-based adventure game available for download on the iOS app store. Device 6 follows the protagonist Anna who has to solve puzzles for her freedom. You will control Anna and have to solve those puzzles and make tough decisions based on the in-game prompts. The game uses text, visuals, and audio to guide you through the story, even making audio necessary to play the game. Device 6 is similar to other text-based adventure games like Raging Loop or Zork, and comes with a good amount of detail.
Completing the Puzzles
The puzzles in Device 6 are challenging but they aren’t incredibly difficult. Obviously you could find the answers by looking for them but this is a game where staying sharp and paying attention will be enough for you to progress.
Keeping yourself engaged is one of the most important things because you will have to identify and remember key details to make it through the story.
Device 6, which is essentially read like a novel, has intricate and detailed scenes and imagery. It has little almost hidden details that contain important information and are what makes it somewhat of a mystery solving game. The story itself isn’t great or anything but it does become interesting and introduce compelling characters and areas. The writing quality is so detailed and descriptive that it’s like you’re reading a book.
Get on Your Reading Glasses
This game has a lot of reading, even for a text-based game. Where other game have you read a few paragraphs then make some important decisions or solve a tricky riddle, Device 6 is like reading Moby Dick but having to make crucial decisions for one of the characters every once in a while. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but be prepared to do more reading than you thought you would if you start playing Device 6.
Device 6 is fairly expensive for an app at $4 but that’s not much to pay for an adventure game. If you’re into reading and like solving puzzles you will almost certainly enjoy this game, however, if you are not the biggest fan of reading and get tired out without enough stimulation, you’ll find yourself bored at certain parts of this game. Device 6 is for those who want to be invested in a story as well as be a part of it.
As far as text-based games go, Device 6 has a strong storyline and intriguing events. However, the reading is quite a lot and can be daunting even for a game that relies on reading, and the story isn’t quite good enough to be interesting for that long. Parts of the game will have you feeling like you’re back in school, having to pay attention to a book so you can answer questions about it, of course, Device 6 is more fun than that, but it just becomes drawn out and too elaborate.
- Good storyline
- Fun and challenging puzzles to solve
