If we’re talking about video games where you have to go around collecting all the creatures around, Pokémon is usually the first one to jump to mind. However, the fight between Pokémon and Digimon has always been a constant, even though Pokémon did come first. Both franchises have very different games, even though the basic concept may seem a bit similar at first. This time, we’ll be checking out Digimon World Data Squad, a title released in 2006.

That's the very same year that Pokémon would start up their fourth-gen games. Of course, the game would only release in japan in 2006, and it released much later on in 2017 for the North American audience. But, was Digimon trying to compete against games like Pokemon Pearl & Diamond? Or is it just another game that will further on send these series in completely different directions? Well, let's start by getting to know this title a little better.

About the game

Unlike with Pokémon, Digimon does take the story of the source material into consideration for their games. And in this case, it sets us directly into the Digimon Savers series, where we'll control the four main characters of the anime with their respective main Digimon. Of course, as usual, it will depend on how you treat and train your Digimon to see what they evolve into. Digimon evolution lines are much more complex than Pokémon, and they are in no way linear.

They classify this game as a supposedly new special genre called "Dramatic/innovative RPG. But this is mostly to describe the evolution process. Even though it's not the first Digimon game to implement this, as even the physical Digivicesw work that way. And games like Digimon World have been doing this for many years before this title was released.

Going strong against Pokémon?

So, is this game Digimon's counter to the fourth-gen Pokémon games? Absolutely not. First of all, this game was only released for a home console, the PS2, and it is based on an anime. The gameplay is completely different, and it's not even like the basic RPG games that are more similar to Pokémon. By that time, Pokémon also had plenty of games released for home consoles, but none of them are considered part of the main series. And even though Digimon does not have a "main series" equivalent, this one's far from being the main title of the time for the franchise.

Digimon World Data Squad is a nice title for a fan of the anime, and it's all ok game for Digimon fans. But unless you're really into the franchise and the source material, this one's hard to recommend. They went and even named it in a new genre "dramatic/innovative RPG".

But it's not really innovative at all, and it's only dramatic how dull most of the game is. Still, it has a good bunch of positive things too, while it may not innovate much, what it does it does right.

The RPG mechanics are well developed and the gameplay is solid, with nice visuals and a real anime feel to it all. The characters are great and there are a lot of Digimon available, and thanks to the evolution mechanics there’s a lot of replayability available. If you’re a Digimon fan you should try this one, and even if you just like RPG games, this could be for you. Sure, it’s not a Pokémon game, but you shouldn’t be looking for that when going for a Digimon game.

Pros

  • Nice visuals
  • Good mechanics
  • A lot like the anime
  • Great evolution-line implementation

Cons

  • Not very innovative
  • Can be repetitive
  • It gets boring fast
  • It lacks freedom of exploration and movement
