Dragon Ball Z MUGEN is a game that feels like it was made by hardcore fans of the franchise. While it might not have been developed with a large budget, this is a game that manages to be impressive throughout your experience playing it.
Story and Setting
In Dragon Ball Z MUGEN, the typical DBZ storyline and campaign mode are not present. Instead, you’re getting a full-fledged fighting game experience that pits you against many of the most iconic Dragon Ball heroes and villains.
To better understand how this game works, it’s best we explain the backstory behind it. DBZ Mugen is not an officially made Dragon Ball game. However, that doesn’t make it any less fun or interesting as a video game. In fact, it was created by various artists who came together to design the characters, stages, abilities, animations and effects across the board. The design philosophy game was to create a fan-made DBZ 2D fighting game that matches the feeling of its manga and anime series. Judging from how well it plays, we think they did a fantastic job.
Gameplay
For the actual gameplay in DBZ MUGEN, the MUGEN graphic engine shows its colors with the powerful gameplay capabilities in full display. The fighting keys in this game are based on the classic “WASD” PC buttons combined with your cursor keys for movements.
There are over 15 Dragon Ball characters in DBZ Mugen with more that were added over time. Each of the included characters are capable of using their own unique combos, attacks and movements. At certain points, you’ll be visibly blown away by what you will witness.
Some of the characters included in Dragon Ball Z MUGEN are iconic favorites like Son Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo and a few villains like Frieza, Buu and the Android enemies. You also have variations of certain characters such as SSJ4 Goku who sports his intimidating look from the Dragon Ball GT series.
If you’re a fan of pixelated graphics and arcade style fighting games, this won’t be disappointing you in any way. It has everything you could ask for, especially if you want a free game that can be played to your satisfaction regularly. It doesn’t have any demanding requirements and takes up only 31.2 MB for the installation. As a gamer on a budget, it should be a top pick if you want a game that can somewhat live up to the Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball Fighter Z type of gameplay.
Verdict
Don’t expect it to completely blow you out of the water though, as there are a few hiccups that might make you feel a little shortchanged, but you can’t read too deep into it. Especially because DBZ Mugen was developed by an independent team of passionate fans.
Dragon Ball Z MUGEN might not be the game you’ve always imagined yourself playing as a DBZ fan, but it does a good job at satisfying players that are on a budget.
