Elemental: War of Magic

Elemental: War on Magic is an interesting title. At first glance, it looks like a standard turn-based strategy game akin to 4X games like Civilization and Stellaris. Looking past the surface, however, you’ll find an RPG hidden away that elevates the experience into something far more unique. All of this, wrapped in a high fantasy setting and some nifty little ideas and Elemental’s offering to the world is an enjoyable game worth giving a shot.

Let’s take a gander at what Elemental: War of Magic brings to the table.

All About the Skirmish

The game kicks you off with a campaign, which is pretty much what you’d expect from a strategy game. The difference here, though, is that Elemental: War of Magic doesn’t try to pretend that they’ve crafted a fun and intriguing story to follow. There’s no grand spectacle here worth playing through to see what happens.

No real heroes to root for and villains worth taking down a peg. Instead, Elemental wants you to get into the real meat of the game, it’s one-shot AI battles, by making their campaign more like a tutorial. Once you’re done with that, you can start setting up skirmish battles against AI opponents. Make no mistake, though, as each of these mini-campaigns is its own self-contained 4X experience, complete with town-building, marriage and kids, army raising and resource gathering.

Tailor-Made Armies

What makes Elemental: War of Magic particularly cool is how far you can go with customizing your own faction in each of your one-shot skirmishes. You can raise a perfectly fine human army that fights monsters, levels up and can be thrown into battle with what you’d expect humans to be equipped with. Or, you can raise your very own hell hounds to fight alongside your squishy humans. The possibilities feel limitless (though they aren’t actually) as the game does its darndest to surprise you with new discoveries and interesting ways to develop your faction.

The Hero We Need

The most important part of the factions you build up in each campaign is your avatar within the game, called the Sovereign. This character operates like an RPG hero you would create in any kind of RPG. Your Sovereign in Elemental: War of Magic can do all sorts of cool things such as get married, ride horses, don a variety of different equipment and even initiate a variety of researches and investigations.

In essence, the Sovereign is like your own presence is in the game, guiding your faction towards any direction you please.

8

Overall, Elemental: War of Magic is an interesting blend of 4X grand strategy and turn-based RPG. Most of the time it works but the core of what makes the game fascinating to play doesn’t lie so much in its gameplay as it does in the little surprises and secrets it reveals with each new playthrough.

Pros

  • A unique combination of grand strategy and turn-based RPG.
  • Mini campaigns are randomly generated making the experience different with each playthrough.
  • The Sovereign offers a lot of customization options and different builds to experiment with.

Cons

  • The main campaign is more like a tutorial and not expansive or interesting.
  • You’ll need to get all of the patches released to this day to get the game functioning as intended.
