I was so excited for Expeditions: Rome that I pretty much did every single thing that you could do in the demo before the game launched. This is a turn based RPG set in the days of Rome. While many games have a setting like this, I think the way that this game lets you shape the story and the way it has an interesting turn based battle system too makes it something that is pretty unique and cool. I wanted to share with you guys some of the main features of the game and why I think it is certainly a game that you guys need to keep a close eye on.
What Kind Of Leader Will You Be?
The plot of Expeditions: Rome is something that to me sounds very interesting. In the game, we play as a young Legatus (a person of high standing) whose father is murdered by a political rival! You go on the run and end up in the military where you rise to become an epic leader.
A leader that will take Rome and then expand to take as much of the world as you see fit. It sounds like great stuff and the game has a very slick presentation too which I think will greatly help with the story. There are three campaigns for you here too with each one being set on a different nation.
Combat, Rome Style
What really drew me to Expeditions: Rome was the combat. This is turn based combat, but the depth here is incredible. All the weapons in the game of which there are a vast number, will change how you operate on the battlefield. There is a very interesting skill system here that allows you to develop your legion in the way that you want. Of course, you do not have to just wage war all the time. While that is more my style if I am being honest, you can use your wit and words to try and expand across the globe as well a politics can be as important as a sword.
A True Leader
While I already talked about how Expeditions: Rome allows you to be the kind of leader you want to be in terms of how you decide to deal with other nations. This actually rings true for the way your character looks too. I was not expecting this game to have such a deep character customization suite.
You have complete control over the way your character looks, their gender, and how you will distribute their skills. I was very impressed with what this game offered here and it certainly helps get you more invested in the game.
I would wager that many people will look at Expeditions: Rome or heard about it and assume that it is yet another RTS game set in Rome. While there might be a few elements of that here, this is way more of an RPG and it is a damn fine one too. I know that games like this are not for everyone, but if you have an interest in Rome and like RPGs, especially turn based ones, you need to have a look at this. Oh, there is a free demo for this game and that is what got me hooked here.
Pros:
- I love the visual presentation of the game
- The way you create your character is fantastic
- I love the way you can decide what kind of leader you want to be
- There are three campaigns for you to take part in
Cons:
- The gameplay is quite deep and might be a bit too much of a slow burn
- From what I understand there are no plans for this to have multiplayer
