Virtual reality is a rapidly emerging market, with many new creative games coming out every day. Gorilla Tag is one of these games, turning a simple game of tag into something more exciting. In Gorilla Tag, you play a legless gorilla in a large environment filled with ropes and other climbing equipment.
You play against other players, and must swing, jump and climb faster or better than the other gorillas to either catch them or keep away. This is one of those games that are easy to learn, but hard to master.
A Great Workout
The first thing you should know about this game is that you’ll be getting a fine set of arms playing this game. The game is controlled by two remotes you hold in your hand. To climb, you mimic the motions while spinning, jumping and running through the course.
The result is an amazing workout, while still having lots of fun playing the game. It’s also probably best to clear the area when playing so nothing gets knocked over during play.
Community Fun
This game is multiplayer, with different servers available to host various matches. While some people have noted instances of racial slurs or other insults, the overwhelming reports are of a warm community open to newcomers. The game is definitely more fun with people to help you learn the ropes, and most people are willing to do so.
No tutorials, no need
An interesting feature of this game is that there is no tutorial, no menu, and no real need for any of those things. Since gamers are playing a legless monkey, everything involves pushing or pulling off of the world around you. This makes holding the remotes sensible, and gameplay remarkably intuitive. After the first few awkward movements, playing the game becomes second nature, and skills continue to get better and better. The movement and world is like a VR version of the PC game, Monkey See, Monkey Do. It’s largely a game of tag, but with a tangle of vines and trees and cliffs for climbing on.
Tag can get pretty tense with players using their skills to try and evade each other in these vertical maps. While anyone can pick up the idea of the game in just a few minutes, perfecting the ability to scale cliffs and jump from branch to branch takes much longer.
Despite the simple graphics and the odd-looking legless gorillas, Gorilla Tag is a must have game for VR players. It offers innovative gameplay that will keep players working to improve for hours. The community is vibrant and mostly filled with people who want to help you. It’s easy to get started in the game, but there is always room for growth.
The only downside to this game is that occasionally there’s a bad apple in the community issuing racial slurs. Everyone finds this offensive, but if you are particularly sensitive you may want to avoid playing this game.
Pros:
- Innovative VR Concept
- Warm Community
- Endless Gameplay
Cons:
- Some racism from individual players noted
