If you’re a fan of indie or simulation or survival or farming or post-apocalyptic games then you should like this one because it’s all of that. Join the last survivor on earth as he tries to make the dried up planet habitable again in Green Project by Zerone Games.

The Gameplay

This game looks and plays like Stardew Valley, but a tad grimmer. After the world ended, it’s up to you to explore the world and try to start life again by farming piece by piece until you terraform Earth back into a liveable state. Heavy on exploration, survival and farming, you have to raise pigs tend the land and do everything in your power to make your stay a little less terrible.

The world is not without hazards, ignoring starvation or dehydration; you may come into contact with radioactive wild lands that take your life as you explore and search for more materials and items. This title does require a fair bit of effort to get the hang of with its mechanic but once you do, you’ll find it to be incredibly absorbing. There is no combat but starting off with nothing in a hostile world can be dangerous enough as you probably won’t survive long in your first go of it. With a day-night cycle and more than 220 craftable items, there is more than enough content to keep you occupied. Just make sure you watch your energy levels.

The Look

With that charming pixel art, this game finds its place well amongst Stardew Valley and Terraria style titles. Everything is sharp, clear to see and understand with easy to conceive environments. Many games struggle to convey an item or thing but this one does not, it easily shows everything you need to see so you rarely walk around feeling lost and unable to find what you’re looking for.

The Setting

Although the world lacks a decent narrative, it’s still quite engaging. The game is simple and doesn’t require you to think too much about anything other than survival, making it quite easy to jump into. I always find it incredibly interesting to explore lost, forgotten and destroyed worlds and this game is no exception.

Although there isn’t really any lore to discover which is a shame and leaves the world feeling a bit bare; Thinking about it, if the world suddenly ended there might not be a great amount of people writing about it in their journals and conveniently leaving the entries scattered about for future generations to stumble across.

9

This is an amusing and relatively safe romp through the wasteland. If you are after a game that isn’t actively trying to kill you with zombies and such but still offers a nice survival element then this is the game for you. A perfect way to lose over 100 hours.

Pros

  • Fantastic pixel art
  • Exploration was fun and interesting
  • No loading screens

Cons

  • Lack of any real “enemy” caused it to lose depth
  • A greater objective could have proved interesting, even if that objective wasn’t the end game
