A 3D collectathon that isn’t afraid to offend anyone, Hell Pie offers players an irreverent and quirky adventure that offers tons of secrets to discover and stuff to collect in each of its bizarre levels. In a quest for the unholy ingredients for Satan’s pie, join Nate in his quest to be as nasty as inhumanly possible.

Hell Pie is an interesting take on the once-beloved collectathon genre. Though many players might feel like some of the design elements of the title are a bit dated, there’s no denying that the developers over at Sluggerfly know how to make a 3D platformer game that manages to feel both fun and rewarding through most of the gaming experience.

Diabolical Recipes

The game has the player taking control of Nate, the so-called “Demon of Bad Taste,” as the imp collects the necessary ingredients to bake a most disgusting pie for Satan’s birthday. If the premise of the game sounds a bit off-color, that’s entirely on purpose. The developers wanted to create something that would appeal to players who were looking for a dark sense of humor – which they did with flying colors!

If you’re a bit squeamish, don’t worry: this is more like The Binding of Isaac rather than Postal 2. As the premise implies, Nate will have to run through levels and do some errands for other characters if he hopes to acquire the ingredients for his ultimate culinary creation.

Along for the journey is Nate’s pet angel, Nugget. Since he’s chained to the demon, players can use him as a weapon and a tool to reach higher places. It seems similar to a lesser-known PS2-era title called Whiplash, where collaboration between the game’s two unlikely protagonists was a key aspect of the gameplay.

Nastiness Redefined

Humor is a core element of Hell Pie’s design. While there’s lots of questionable material to be found here, not every player will find the humor appealing. However, the game manages to hit home just enough times that it will likely satisfy those who love their jokes to be a bit macabre.

The game’s visual department might also prove divisive. The game uses a cel-shaded art style, which gives it a sort of cartoonish vibe. Many players might find the visuals a bit too simple and plain, but some may appreciate the simplicity of the aesthetic.

Levels feature some decent amount of platforming and stuff to collect, but the overall experience is largely focused on the gameplay itself. Players won’t get to do much talking or interacting with NPCs outside of giving them what they need to move forward. That being said, the dialogue is still fairly amusing and the characters manage to deliver some solid lines. There's enough variety in both Nate's abilities and level design that it'll keep gamers entertained well into the game. While the main story mode doesn't last for too long, the extra missions add some replay value. Though not incredibly challenging, they're all worth trying out, even if it's only for the achievements.

Overall, Hell Pie is an excellent homage to the classic platformers of yesteryear. While the game doesn't reinvent the wheel, it does offer up enough action and humor to bring back plenty of fond memories, especially for fans of games like Conker’s Bad Fur Day.
