Hex Commander: Fantasy Heroes

A turn-based hex-based title where players have to amass large armies to overcome fantastical battles, Hex Commander: Fantasy Heroes will test players’ strategic prowess and force them to think on their feet. Thanks to its healthy selection of scenarios and units, this is one strategy game that shouldn’t be overlooked.

As a free-to-play title, players can also expect a good amount of microtransactions, including but not limited to currency boosters, rare cards, and other valuable items. Don't worry though—the developers of the game do offer plenty of ways to earn in-game coins without having to buy any. Is this one game that you should check out? Let's delve deeper into the specifics…

Epic Battles

Much like the fabled Total War: Warhammer series, players can pick from a variety of unique empires to control in the world of Hex Commander. Each empire has its own strengths and weaknesses, and these factors help dictate how you play the game. For example, if you choose to join the Elves, then you will need to focus on ranged attacks, while Dwarves require lots of melee attacks.

The classes are Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Orcs, Goblins, and the Undead. Each faction also has unique heroes and units that can help tip the scales in your favor. The AI is quite smart, so don't expect to win all the time, especially when facing a powerful opponent. There are also numerous custom maps to explore, as well as a plethora of different scenarios for you to try out.

In short, there’s always something else to do besides fighting, especially since the developers have included a lot of hidden objectives for you to complete. In fact, some of these objectives may be crucial to helping you achieve victory.

Even though the intense skirmishes are fun, they can get pretty repetitive after a while. That’s where the campaigns come in — and where Hex Commander: Fantasy Heroes truly shines.

Fantastical Campaigns

As mentioned before, the game’s campaign mode is where the action really comes alive. From commanding Elven armies into an epic conquest to battling a horde of Orcs, each campaign feels unique thanks to the wide range of characters and units available to you.

The campaigns start off slow, providing you with a nice introduction to the world, the factions, and the various challenges you'll be facing throughout your journey. As time goes on, new and exciting unique objectives are introduced, which helps keep things fresh. If you want to enjoy the best experience possible, make sure to check out the tutorials first.

Speaking of learning, there are plenty of tips and tricks available in the game’s info section — and you’ll need them, as the game ramps up the difficulty quite often.

Visual Prowess

From a technical standpoint, Hex Commander leaves a bit to be desired. The graphics look okay, but there are issues with character models, animations, and sound effects. It can also be hard to tell what is happening during the heat of battle, and it can take a few seconds to load certain parts of the map.

Thankfully, the UI and menus work nicely, so you won’t encounter any major problems here. Also, the user interface is very intuitive, making it easy to switch between units and spells, as well as access the main menu.

Hex Commander: Fantasy Heroes is a great game to play if you want to test your strategic thinking skills and see how far you can go relying on your skill alone. The campaign mode will keep you busy for hours, even if the individual skirmishes might feel a bit repetitive.
