Hubris is a VR action-adventure game that pushes the limits like few others have ever tried. Take control of a new recruit in the Order of Objectivity, and travel to a new planet that is undergoing terraforming. It’s up to you to avoid the dangers and survive the harsh environment while you learn the long-forgotten secrets of your faction. If you want to run, jump, climb and battle your way through this stunning experience and really get your chance to feel like a space explorer, this is the one for you. Let’s get into it.
This is a virtual reality game, meaning you need a VR kit to play it. There are a few VR games about but very few of them go for this level of detail and style. If you imagine Star Citizen mixed itself up with Blood & Truth, you’d get a pretty good idea of what this game is all about. The gameplay is surprisingly intuitive, and has you run around, climb up natural structures, engage in fun gunplay, and explore this fantastical alien environment. I found the game very easy to play and had several moments of completely losing myself in it, this is something that only VR games can achieve, and this one does it perfectly.
One of the standout parts of the game, aside from traversal, is the combat. Battles feel frenetic and engaging, having you encounter several enemies at once with lasers blasting off in all directions. It is truly a spectacle that grips you, and lets you know what it would probably be like traveling through space.
Hubris is absolutely stunning. I was shocked from start to finish with how pretty the game looks. Whether you’re climbing around the gorgeous rock faces, or swimming through azure blue waters, you’ll often find yourself staring at the environment in awe. Something I found truly incredible was how the technological sections looked. As your traveling around, you will often find yourself in dark, neon lit corridors and structures that look simply breathtaking. Each scene felt like it was grounded enough to be real, but fantastical enough to feel like an alien world. Not many places manage to pull that off to this level, but Hubris smashes it.
Without spoiling too much, I’ll try to tell you a bit about the story. You play a recruit for a mysterious and powerful organization known as the Order of Objectivity (OOO). You are sent to a stunning alien world where you must find a missing agent known as Cyanha. As you travel, you will have to defeat native aliens, learn how to craft weapons, and control vehicles and machinery.
You will also encounter a few other factions that are looking to discover the secrets of your organization. Time to get stuck in and earn your place as an agent of the OOO.
A fantastic VR game that really tries some new things. If you love engaging space adventure games, this is for you.
