Video games have advanced to the point that they can be considered art, or even cinema. Games that combine live-action footage with player interaction are nothing new, FMV games have existed since the 80s and 90s. However, there is one man that is hell-bent on bringing those games back in a big way, and making them incredible experiences you can’t get anywhere else. That man is Sam Barlowe, and his latest game, IMMORTALITY, is another work of art that combines well-written stories and characters with unparalleled interaction in this format. If you’re a fan of those old FMV games, or of Sam Barlow in general, then here is everything you need to know about IMMORTALITY.

Another Intriguing Mystery

Sam Barlow is the brain behind such mind-bending experiences as Her Story, Telling Lies, and even a few entries in the beloved Silent Hill franchise, namely Origins and Shattered Memories. With a pedigree like that, you know that whatever Sam makes will be special, and IMMORTALITY seeks to continue that trend. The game is staged much the same as Her Story and Telling Lies, where the player is presented with information that they must scan through to piece together a mystery. This mystery in particular surrounds Marissa Marcel, an actress who starred in several films that were never released. After the actress goes missing, the films she left behind might be the only way to find her whereabouts or discover her fate.

Iconic Barlow Gameplay

If you played any of Sam Barlow’s previous games, you’ll be familiar with IMMORTALITY’s gameplay. Players will be presented with a clip from one of Marissa’s unreleased films, which can then be manipulated to search for clues and details. You can click on people or items in that clip for more information. After that, more clips from those films and even behind-the-scenes and interview footage will also become available, providing even more information for you to piece together. Finding all of these important people and items will lead you to draw your own terrifying conclusions about what actually happened to Marissa.

Live-Action Footage

As has become synonymous with any of Sam Barlow’s work, all of the footage in IMMORTALITY contains real actors in highly-produced sequences. The game covers three fictional films that make up Marissa Marcel’s filmography. Each film was created in a different year, and the quality of the footage and the style of the filmmaking accurately depict the individual time periods.

And, since two films take place in the late 60s/early 70s and the other is from 1999, there is plenty of variation in the kind of film you will be scanning through. You would think that because its an indie game, the quality of the acting might be suspect, but it’s not. All of the actors in IMMORTALITY are top-notch and really sell the roles they have been given.
