Arena shooters can be an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, but they can quickly become stale if there’s nothing to help spice it up. With Impaler, you get all the fun of a standard arena shooter, plus a new twist---spikes you can summon to destroy your enemies.

The game also has rogue like elements that help make every level feel fresh and different. Monsters get progressively more difficult and change over time, so you’ll also have to spend time upgrading weapons to be able to keep up.

90s Artwork and Vibe

If Impaler reminds you of old school games like Raptor and the original Wolfenstein, it was intentional. Impaler uses a somewhat pixelated motif to help capture that feel. The retro soundtrack and relatively stiff camera angle are all intentional.

Although the game looks like it came straight out of the 90s, it won’t lag like one. The retro artwork hides a powerful engine that boosts frame rate for a smooth experience. The engine was custom made in pure C + OpenGL for a bloat free experience.

Although the game does have a pixelated look, there are hints that a lot of work went into the graphics. Atmospheric fog is dynamic, and so is the lighting, giving the old style appearance a fresh new take.

Perfect for all skill levels

Impaler describes itself as, “Easy to learn, difficult to master.” This is true. The game is easy enough that even a raw beginner will understand the rules and find getting started easy. Despite being easy to understand though, there’s always room to grow.

Experienced players will find unlocking all the levels and ascending to the highest levels a real challenge. Bullets can ricochet in this game, which means you’ll have to factor that in. It may look like a 90s game, but it definitely has some higher tech options smoothed into the backdrop.

Unlockable Content

As mentioned earlier, you’ll need to upgrade your weapons and armor in order to be able to ascend beyond the first view levels. Upgrading your weapons is done through unlocking them. You will need to earn Gold, the in-game currency, to get these upgrades.

There are over 40 of these upgrades, and you’ll have to pick and choose which one you think will be the most helpful to you. This will depend on your play style and adds replay value since you can play again to try upgrades you know you like later on.

Not everyone loved 90s games, but if you were one of those who did, this is a good game to try. Impaler offers a lot of fun in the arena shooter genre, with some other elements thrown in to keep it original. This game will make you think, test your reflexes, and keep you playing long after your first run through. If you like arena shooters, give it a try.
