Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 is a sequel to a Dreamcast game that I think is borderline a bit of a hidden gem. Was it amazing? No, but I played through the game and enjoyed it. So, when this was announced, I was interested to see what they would do. It was released in 2005 for the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and original Xbox. For some reason, a couple of years back it was re-released on PC via Steam.

Kao The Hero

Barnaba the Hunter from the first game is back and he is once again up to no good. In Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2, we play as Kao and he is trying to save his fellow animal friends. Barnaba has captured them all and now only Kao can save the day. At the end of the day, this is a game that is aimed at kids and the story is very simplistic and reflects that. I like Kao as a character and the only two kangaroos that are better than him in gaming are the mama kangaroo from the Atari classic Kangaroo and Roo from Streets of Rage 3!

Cartooning Is Great!

I played the GameCube version of Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 and thought that it looked great back then and I think that it does kind of hold up pretty well to this day. It is like you are playing through a Saturday morning cartoon and that is cool. It has a somewhat cell-shaded kind of thing going on which works very well. There are not exactly a ton of little details, but I like how each of the five worlds has its own them such as water, forest, and snow with their own themed enemies too.

The soundtrack fits the look of the game very well and the voice acting that is here is way better than you would think. Actually, I would probably go as far as to say that the voice acting is better here than in many other aimed at kids’ 3D platformers that were released during this time.

Step Into The Ring With Kao

What we have here is a very basic and quite short 3D platformer. Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 is one of those games that plays it all very, very safe. It is not too hard, there are frequent checkpoints and you have a very easy to figure out combo system. Kao can use projectiles that he fires from his boxing gloves, but he can also do some pretty cool boxing combos when up close. It controls well enough and each of the different worlds has their own stages and boss to defeat. In all, it does what it does very well, but it is like platforming 101 and it never really tries to do anything radically new. It is the kind of game that you will beat once in around 6 hours and then probably never go back to.

7.5

Even though Kao the Kangaroo: Round 2 is a game that is very by the numbers when it comes to a 3D platformer. I do feel that this game has a bit of charm to it and is worth playing if you are looking for a fun 3D platformer that is not going to aggravate you. I think if you have kids or younger siblings and you want to ease them into the world of 3D platformers, this might be a good one to start them with.

Pros:

  • Kao is a pretty fun character
  • The story feels like a kid’s cartoon
  • While simple, the game plays decent enough
  • It would be a great game for a younger gamer to play

Cons:

  • This game takes zero risks with the platforming formula
  • It is short and not the kind of thing you would play again
