Disaster has hit the world of LEGO but thankfully, there is an army of superheroes to help save the day! In Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe of Peril, you get to play as dozens of recognizable and obscure heroes from the world of Marvel comics. With a unique story that includes countless villains and locations, the game is wonderful for those fans who have stuck with the franchise from the beginning. Optimized for handheld consoles, Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe of Peril brings a whole lot of action despite its small size.
Main Game Features
- Basic isometric action gameplay
- Huge list of playable heroes
- Original and interesting story
Through the game's 15 missions, Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe of Peril tells a story that feels like it was pulled straight from a Marvel comic book. While working for the mega-villain Galactus, the Silver Surfer's board breaks into several powerful cosmic bricks, which are scattered across Earth. Aware of the bricks' existence, villains like Loki and Doctor Doom plan to use them to achieve world domination and build terrible weapons. To prevent this from happening, all of the superheroes of Earth join together to retrieve the bricks first and stop Galactus' mastermind plan. The story is almost exactly the same as the console game Lego Marvel Super Heroes, but with reduced cutscenes and talking. Each mission tells details roughly the same events and information, but with specific segments cut out. It's good to see the story kept the same, but the quality of the cutscenes and audio is very poor. Big technical problems make most of the cutscenes tough to sit through, but most of them are short.
Falling in line with the trend created with games like Lego Star Wars and Lego Batman, Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril gives players a straightforward experience that is good for both kids and adults. Unlike the console version, there is no open world to explore, but the missions are a blast. Traveling between familiar places like Stark Tower and the X-Men Mansion, you get to control distinguished heroes like Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Widow, and many more. The level design is straightforward with a clear beginning and end, but you'll find many extra items if you search hard enough.
To unlock new missions, you must collect gold bricks that are earned by completing specific in-game challenges in previous levels. While many of them are simple, such as defeating a certain amount of enemies, others will take you several tries. This gives you the opportunity to try out different heroes and their unique moves, which makes some challenges easier than others. There are some puzzles to complete levels, but they aren't very tough, so combat is key to victory.
While it lacks the big open world of its console sibling and has some pretty bad cutscenes, Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril can still be very fun. Flying around as Iron Man or swinging past bad guys as Spider-Man is just as fun on handhelds.
If you can't get enough of the latest Marvel movies and superheroes are your jam, you'll get a big kick out of Lego Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril.
- Console-style experience on handheld
