Lonely Mountains: Downhill

Originally a Kickstarter game, Lonely Mountains: Downhill received a ton of support from the gaming community. Megagon Industries made sure to make it a reality, and they almost overdelivered with a beautiful, engaging, and addicting game. Lonely Mountains: Downhill will have you constantly trying to beat your own score, but getting distracted by the scenes you encounter along the way, all to die again in a death animation that seems it cannot possibly get old.

Visuals

While Lonely Mountains: Donwhill is not a highly rendered, hyper realistic simulation, it does offer some nice visuals for the type of game it is. Megagon Industries made sure to stay true to a fun art style, one that does not take away anything from the game itself, but also made sure that nobody could complain on a lack of work of the developers when it comes to how the game looks. Its low-poly art style, similar to Roblox or Clustertruck, gives way for tiny details to be forgotten and the vast scene of the game to be taken in instead, immersing yourself in what almost feels like the natural world, but you know it is not.

Although you may never question the line that separates reality from game when playing Lonely Mountains, you may find yourself questioning how such an unrealistic and almost silly looking world can be so beautiful and intriguing at the same time.

Gameplay

The objective of Lonely Mountains: Downhill is quite simple: Get to the bottom of the mountain. Just like many games, however, it is much easier said than done. For starters, the mountain is massive, and if you want to get down quickly (or have fun while doing it), there is no trail to guide you. You begin with a trail that you are able to take, but it is very hard to stay on and most will find that it is much easier to just make your own path.

Flying down through uncharted lands, untouched by another person requires intense focus and quick reactions, as you may never know what will interrupt your path and cause a need for a detour. If you fail to think of your feet fast enough, you will find yourself decorating the scene of nature around you with various parts of your body, like a lowly rendered Happy Wheels for kids.

9.5

Lonely Mountains: Downhill is a great game for two reasons: it is simple enough for anyone to enjoy, and it is challenging enough for anyone to rip their hair out. Casual players can get frustrated enough in their attempts to simply beat the level and find themselves spending hours on a level for the joy of satisfaction once the level is beaten, while skilled players can get frustrated trying to better their time, also spending hours on a level for the satisfaction once their record is beaten. Such a simple game with a simple goal is extremely attractive to all sorts of players, making this a near perfect game. I rate Lonely Mountains: Downhill a 9.5/10 game.
