From the early days of cinema, the audience has had a fascination with cowboys, and this genre has inspired so many great films and game series. But just as it happened with movies, it is a genre we don’t see that many games being made in the modern day. Today we’re talking about a game called Mad Dog McCree, originally released in 1990, even though it was re-released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. But after just the first look, you’ll notice that this game is nothing like what you’d expect to see, especially if you’re not used to THIS kind of retro game.

About the game

Remember the good old days when everybody used to play all those Laserdisc games based on pre-recorded video and were basically interactive short films? Well, chances are you don't remember such a time, 'cause this pretty much never happened. Even though there were still a solid amount of games of this kind released, pretty much none of them really made it into the annals of gaming history.

Mad Dog McCree, the dangerous gunman by the name of Mad Dog McCree is going around causing a mess. He’s not alone though, he comes heavily armed and with his entire crew.

A real western?

Engine Software was the studio in charge of bringing the classic Mad Dog McCree shooting game to the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

The title, originally released in the arcade in 1990, relies entirely on real video scenes to expose the story. The studio has clarified that they will not make use of the system's 3D functionality. It is a rather unique gun game, which used real image graphics, in a fashion that abounded during that era, at the dawn of CD-ROM and Laserdisc as data storage media with a much larger capacity than cartridges and ROMs.

Of course today we have had some of the best cinematic experiences in the western genre thanks to the incredible Red Dead Redemption, but a game like that was unthinkable in the 90s. In the same sense and idea, it is hard to categorize Mad Dog McCree as a real western game, especially because it is little more than a rail shooter. But still, it is incredibly unfair to compare a game like this, which was hardly ever considered to be a real game, to more modern titles such as Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption.

So, long story short, we cannot really consider this game a western title, but for modern players, it may be a really interesting experience.

Review: 5.3/10

Mad Dog McCree isn’t really much of a game, it is more akin to an interactive video experience. However, even though these experiences were never really popular, they have become an interesting thing for more modern players. Why is this? Well, as time passes it seems that big AAA games want to be more similar to movies, and now the line has been getting more blurred than ever before. But there’s no denying that, for better or for worse, these old games are pretty much the predecessors to that.

5.5

Still, it's hard to make a point for this game, other than it is pretty cool for modern players that have never played a game like this.

Pros:

  • Interesting game
  • Cool for modern players
  • Nice scenes

Cons:

  • Short
  • Gets boring fast
