The party game genre is very competitive these days, but Mad Streets is doing more than enough to stand out from the crowd. As I write this the game is not yet complete, but there is a demo you can check out so you have a better idea of what I am talking about today. With that being said, I thought it would be a lot of fun to take a closer look at this party brawler and see what game modes and so on it is offering.
The School Of Hard Knocks
The game takes place in a university called, Gutsford University. While most other universities may have students seeing who is the smartest that is not the case in Mad Streets! Here these crazy kids are all about brawling to see who is the ultimate group of students. All you student stereotypes are here such as jocks, nerds, and punk rockers too.
The Way Of The Fist
So, what kind of game is Mad Streets? This is a physics-based style of game that is all about fighting. You can throw these big wild haymaker punches, but due to the physics of the game, you can target specific body parts. I can tell you right now I cannot think of another game like this that has such satisfying punches… well when you land one right in the face of course! You are encouraged to button mash at first as the idea is that it is a pick up and play style of game, but you can do all kinds of fun combos. Also speaking of “pick up and play” you can also pick up various items and throw them at your opponents.
I think a huge part of what makes the combat in Mad Streets so satisfying is the art style. The characters have a nice and chunky look to them and that for me did help make the hits and falls feel so much more “meatier” if you get what I mean. The battle arenas take place at different spots of the campus and these have fun little details in them.
One Punch Man
You can play this on your own and there is what is basically an arcade mode where you unlock new characters and areas to fight in. Mad Rush Mode is the main game mode and the idea here is that you start off on your own, but recruit more people to your team. If on your own you do this with AI, but the real fun here is with your buddies in multiplayer. There is also a one punch mode which is all about scoring a one punch knockout. In all, there are plenty of game modes to keep you busy here.
I love a good party game and I think that Mad Streets has all the makings of one that is going to be an absolute blast to play. While there is a bit of randomness to the fighting which is where a lot of the fun comes from.
There is also a combo system in here too so you can get good at the game, but then, of course, the chaotic nature of the game can turn the tables on you pretty fast. I also like how the game is clearly intended to be played with other people, but they did not ignore the single player in terms of the game modes on offer.
- I love the visual style of this game
- The punching feels fantastic!
- There is a great selection of game modes here
- You also have a lot to do if you want to play the game in single player
- I think some extra zany voice acting would have gone a long way
- The single player modes are great, but multiplayer is where the longevity is
