The undisputed king of football simulators is back with Madden NFL 18. Featuring an impressively engaging story mode and visuals that look better than ever, this might be the best entry point for new fans looking to get into the franchise and a good incentive for veteran players looking for an excuse to get this year's entry.

Even though the game is not without its fair share of recycled content, there's no denying this is one of the more polished installments in recent years. The gameplay is just as smooth and realistic as it has always been, and it offers some of the most intense football experiences you're going to find on any console or PC.

A Better Story Mode

One of this year's innovations comes in the form of the Longshot story mode. Instead of being the usual career mode that has always been present in games like FIFA 18, Longshot goes for a more interactive storytelling approach.

Players follow the life of Devin Wade, a star football player from Texas who navigates the highs and lows of the sport. It's surprisingly deep, featuring dialogue choices and multiple endings depending on how players progress through the story. These elements help give the story mode some personality and make it feel more personal than just another run-of-the-mill campaign.

One issue, though, is that the game seemingly struggles to find a tone for the story. It goes all over the place, from being a gripping drama, and suddenly adding some unexpected comedy bits.

Feel the Game

Thanks to EA's Frostbite graphics engine, Madden NFL 18 looks even more impressive than ever before. Character models look astounding for a sports title, and every arena features tons of details that breathe life into your surroundings.

Using Frostbite also helped with the characters' expressions in Longshot mode, as it allowed the developers to give them better expressions to further accentuate the dramatic beats of the story.

Lighting has been completely revamped, giving Madden NFL 18 a look that's as close to photorealism as it gets.

You vs. the World

Online competitive modes return in Madden NFL 18, as is to be expected. The pleasant surprise, however, is that online co-op has returned to the series for the first time since Madden 25, released in 2013.

There are also weekly updates that reflect the current state of the real-life NFL. Minute things like player and team stats and roster changes all come together to make a more immersive experience.

It's worth mentioning that EA has seemingly forgotten to add some meaningful changes to the game's Franchise mode. While it has received a batch of fresh yearly content, its basics remain nearly unchanged from last year's release.
