Sometimes we hear about the classics, and how interesting games were in the past when they had to make due of the little resources they had at hand to create something interesting. And this is especially true when it comes to strategy and fantasy games. But even though our modern devices and computers are thousands of times stronger and more capable than those of 30 or 40 years in the past, it can get quite difficult to get these old games running due to compatibility issues. Luckily we've seen many cases of developers bringing a new life into some of these classics, and today's example is Master of Magic. This remake was developed, and it is also the intention to adapt this game for modern audiences, as the original title would hardly be appreciated by current gamers. So, let's talk more about Master of Magic.
But before we start we should mention that here we are going to be talking a little bit about the original and the new remake so that you can get a better idea of what Master of Magic is all about.
About the game
The original Master of Magic is a 4X title that puts us in the shoes of a magician who must prevail over his rivals by conquering rival civilizations. On paper, it sounds pretty generic, but at the time it brought a rather unique touch to its fantasy setting.
This is a classic game of the 90s era of fantasy and strategy, especially as it gave the players the full idea of being able to explore and play as this powerful magician. And even more than that, it also allows you to command troops and units, and use them in campaigns to complete legendary quests. If you're going to play the original game do keep in mind that it's been over two decades since the original release of the game.
The upgrade
Of course, it is pretty hard to bring back this game to a modern era without taking away its personality, and removing what made it unique. But they didn't really do much to change the gameplay itself they kept it almost completely as it was, and just modernize it so it fits to a modern audience. But when it comes to the visuals they opted to keep it simple, instead of adding more content to upgrade the game.
Of course, it's not the same treatment as what they did in games like the new Final Fantasy VII Remake, but it does make a lot of sense. Considering that, while the Final Fantasy series is also a classic and dates back to 1997, Final Fantasy VII is arguably the biggest name in the series, and Final Fantasy is one of the biggest JRPG game series in the world. So that game really received the premium treatment. But this one is more of a passion project, specially made for the niche audience of this classic game.
Master of Magic may not b today what it was back in its days, but it sure is a great shock of nostalgia. And the remake version is also nicely done, a great job in making it look as we imagined it looked like back in the day. By modern standards, it may not be the most incredible game out there, but it's still pretty enjoyable.
Pros:
- Great nostalgic feeling
- It's a very nice game, with a nice interface and controls
Cons:
- The graphics and mechanics are a little dated
