Metal Slug Anthology

I am a huge fan of this series and when the Metal Slug Anthology was released, I was very excited. Just imagine the cost of buying all of the games that are on this collection for the Neo-Geo! It would be thousands of dollars! The game originally was released for the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii and I actually have both of these games in my collection. There were also versions released for the PSP and the PC, but from what I understand the PC version is missing a few features and the PSP clearly does not have local co-op.

The Complete Saga

I have always been a fan of the war and sci-fi story that the Metal Slug series has told. Granted, the series is not exactly story heavy, but I have always got a kick out of what is going on here. In Metal Slug Anthology, you are getting a truly epic collection of games from a franchise that is just awesome.

In this collection, you are getting, Metal Slug, Metal Slug 2, Metal Slug X, Metal Slug 3, Metal Slug 4, Metal Slug 5, and Metal Slug 6. These are some of the best run and gun shooters that have ever been made and having them all here in one collection is truly awesome.

The Arcade Experience At Home

The games are pretty much arcade perfect from what I have experienced. The “emulation” that is on offer here in Metal Slug Anthology is great. I am sure some hard-core fans will notice some slight difference, but for me (and I do love this series) these games are just how I remember playing them in my arcade.

The games play fantastically well, these are run and gun style shooters and they are hard as nails, but they are fair. The Nintendo Wii version of Metal Slug Anthology is my personal favorite as it has the best controller configuration options. However, the PS2 version is also great, but the Wii is my go-to.

Fun With Your Buddies

I have played through all of these games multiple times over the years. I have played it with my friends, but the most fun I have had with this is playing through the games with my son. These are the kind of games that are just a great deal of fun to throw on if you are looking for something fun in local co-op. the PSP version of Metal Slug Anthology does have co-op, but you have to use a cable to do so.

Shooting Pretty

The Neo-Geo was known for its amazing graphical capabilities back in the day and I think that while they have not made any grand changes to these games, the “ports” are very well done and look great. The Nintendo Wii version runs at a higher resolution than the Neo-geo original and I found there to be no screen tearing, frame rate issues, or anything like that.

Extra Features

The extra features that this collection offers are quite good. You have what is basically an art museum where you can view some of the fantastic artwork that makes up this amazing series. There is a soundtrack that you can listen to as well. There are various options for the games such as lives, difficulty, and so on. There are also some cool interviews with people who worked on the game. As good as these features are, I do wish that there was some great making of style documentaries on here too.

9

As you can tell, I love this series and I think that the Metal Slug Anthology would be a great way for you to jump into the series. I do prefer the Nintendo Wii version of the game, but I think that the others are fine too. As I said, the cost of having each of these games on the Neo-Geo would be astronomical, but this collection is here so you do not need to worry about it.

Pros:

  • This collection is stacked with awesome games
  • The visuals are improved a little bit
  • It has a great visual gallery and option to listen to the soundtrack
  • These games are just so much fun to play with others

Cons:

  • I do wish there were a few more special features
  • While this is cheaper than the originals, this collection is starting to creep up in price too
