Metropolismania 2

Metropolismania 2 is an obscure sequel to an obscure game that was released all the way back in 2002 on the PlayStation 2. This sequel was released in 2007. This is a game that not too many people have heard of. It is a game that is trying to be part Animal Crossing and part Sim City and it is a rather quirky and interesting in small bursts kind of game.

The King of the Town

You play as a girl or boy and you can alter the appearance of your character in a few ways. Once you have your character sorted the game actually starts. The point of the game is to make a town and then help your townsfolk be happy. This is done by having people move to your town and making sure the different locations in the town are what they want.

That is the basics of what Metropolismania 2 and that is all there really is to it. From what I played there did not seem to be any actual ending goal that the game wanted you to achieve. I am cool with that as games like Sim City and Animal Crossing are the same.

What Do You Want???

Talking to townsfolk is what you will be doing most of the time. They will usually be complaining about something or other and it is up to you to fix it. This is a game that actually gets easier the more you play it. At first, it can be hard getting people to move to your town in order to open up a school, hospital, or whatever. As you progress through the game, you start to fill up your phone book and you can get new people and amenities to your town much easier.

The town building aspect in Metropolismania 2 is not as in-depth as you would think. You wander around the town in the third person with a camera that is way too zoomed in and a very twitchy camera. The controls, in general, are rather annoying, but as long as you keep your strength up you can jump from building tops and run at a fast speed.

PlayStation 1 or 2?

Even though this game came out in 2007, it could easily pass as a PlayStation 1 game! This is one very rough-looking game.

What is also rough is the translation from Japanese to English, but I am not hating on the game for this as it is more often than not pretty hilarious what the characters will come out with.

I have to say that the only real reason I would suggest you try out Metropolismania 2 is just to say you have played it. This is a very quirky, weird, and unknown game for the PlayStation 2, and the fact the original game even got a sequel is mind-blowing to me. It tries to be like Animal Crossing and Sim City, but it never quite manages to be good at either.

Pros:

  • The game makes for an interesting conversation piece
  • The translation can be funny
  • Lots of people to try and get to come to your town
  • Not many people know this game exists
  • It is inspired by games like Animal Crossing and Sim City

Cons:

  • The whole game feels very low budget
  • It is not clear on what it wants you to do
