Outpost: Infinity Siege

Outpost: Infinity Siege is an innovative blend of first-person shooter, tower defense, and base-building mechanics that offers intense tactical action paired with satisfying progression systems.

As the commander of a Mobile Outpost, you lead the fight against an occupying alien force using customizable weapons and upgradeable defenses. I was hooked by the sheer variety of gameplay offered here that keeps the action feeling fresh.

The basics of the game see you exploring open-world environments to gather resources while battling waves of enemies. Resources are used to upgrade your Mobile Outpost, adding powerful turrets, walls, and support units that assist you in battle.

There's a steady sense of progression as you augment both your character's weaponry and the Outpost itself, creating deadly synergies. It reminds me of the progression loop and loadout customization from the original Overwatch, but here it extends beyond your character to the very arena you do battle in.

Upgrading Your Arsenal

The star of the show is undoubtedly your Protoslag Gun, an adaptable weapon system that can be customized with different attributes and ammunition types unlocked through play. It recalls the weapon variety of Vanquish while offering more innate complexity through its customization systems.

Finding synergies between Protoslag attributes, ammunition types, and your Outpost's composition is supremely rewarding. This creates a strategic push and pull between augmenting your own offensive potential and bolstering your Outpost's defenses.

Tower Offense Meets Tower Defense

Most tower defense games have you building up static defenses to hold off waves of enemies, but Outpost: Infinity Siege's titular Mobile Outpost shakes up this formula. You take direct control of the Outpost as it trundles around the environment, repositioning it to both attack and defend key locations.

It recalls commanding a tank in Battlefield, maneuvering to capture points while blasting away hordes of enemies. This mobility means no two battles play out exactly the same way. Each encounter with enemy forces becomes a thrilling tactical puzzle full of risk and reward as you push your Outpost to its limits while augmenting it with new fortifications and guns on the fly.

Delightful Co-Op Mayhem

While the single-player campaign offers significant longevity on its own, the co-operative Endless mode steals the show. Here you and up to three friends battle endless waves of enemies, combining your distinct Outpost configurations and weapon loadouts into an unstoppable force.

Carnage ensues as Protoslag explosions light up the battlefield while your custom turrets chew through aliens, destroying the environment in hectic tactical battles. From start to finish, Outpost: Infinity Siege delivers wildly creative variety paired with rock-solid shooter fundamentals for an experience whose entertainment value belies its indie origins.
