Phantom Abyss

Phantom Abyss is a game unlike any other, where you explore procedurally-generated temples using the ghosts of your friends as guides. Will you be able to make it through alive and retrieve the precious relics waiting for you at the bottom of the temples? The only way to find out is by trying out the game for yourself. But before that, let me tell you a bit more about the game’s features so you can know what to expect when you download Phantom Abyss and give it a go.

Asynchronous multiplayer

When I mentioned using other people’s ghosts as guides in this game, what I meant by that is that you essentially get to see recordings of previous attempts made by others in the same temple. Other players appear as ghosts much like how you see ghosts in Mario Kart 8 while doing time trials – the players aren’t actually there, but you can see exactly what they did, what shortcuts they took, and where they went wrong. You’ll be able to use the knowledge you gather from watching other attempts to help you avoid traps and make it to the end of the temple without dying. Pretty cool, right?

Temple power-ups

As you progress through a temple, chances are you’ll come across an altar at which you’ll be able to make an offering to gain a power-up. Any treasure you collect along the way can be offered unto the Gods, and if they’re feeling generous, you may gain a new ability or buff to help you get through the rest of the temple. Power-ups include things like damage protection, extended sliding, and even the ability to double jump!

Using keys to unlock new areas

Chests can be found hidden around temples, so be on the lookout for them. These often contain keys that can be used to access new areas within the temples where super rare relics are hidden. Be careful though, as the new areas are often quite challenging to get through.

Disappearing temples

Once the legendary treasure at the bottom of a temple is collected, the temple disappears for good, so do what you can to make sure you’re the first one there. Use the ghosts of others as guides as mentioned, but if you end up also failing, you can send your ghost data to your friends so that they can try their luck at the same temple.

Help each other out, and with a bit of luck and skill, you’ll all have plenty of rare relics in your possession in no time.

Pros:

• Every level is new and unique thanks to the procedural level generation
• Really detailed graphics
• Platforming elements are really cool and varied

Cons:

• Some temples can be really difficult, especially if you’re the first person to ever attempt them
• You only get one attempt per temple, which can be really frustrating when you die
