Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Within the Tower Defence & strategy genre, P. vs. Z quickly became one of the most popular games across the world. Mixing a creative element with the illustrious imagery seen through plants and zombies at war, this game has masterfully crafted a high paced strategy game with fictitious roots that keep millions of gamers playing each year. Now fans of the game can experience an all new, updated version with Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.

The game brings back the same fun experience with new features, customizable characters and abilities. Plants vs. Zombies 2 has done a great job of delivering the same exciting game play experience, now with a more consumer centric focus seen through customizables within the game, although doesn’t deliver anything too innovative in terms of new features.

Gameplay

For those new to the Plants vs. Zombies games, or tower defence games in general, this game is a well done sequel to its original version. However where new players will still love this game it’s a bit more harsh to the newcomers than the original, a lack of proper tutorials may leave new players feeling overwhelmed. Players can spend their time in a variety of modes, choosing from single player or multiplayer, online or local co-op, maps and customizable game modes.

There are six new classes with abilities we hadn’t seen before, and while it may take some time to get the hang of each one, it is clear that the strategic element involved has been raised even higher than before. A similar game would be that of the Bloons Tower Defence series, which is also constantly adding new towers and features as well.

Customization

The game, Garden Warfare 2, seems to rely heavily on the mechanics of the first version, yet where we see new features is in the realm of customization. You are able to customize nearly the entire list of characters through earning and spending in game currency through purchasing card packs. This leads you to playing more and more battles in hopes of earning enough coins, which keeps the game mostly on an even playing field for players where some games feature a ‘pay to win’ style function that can be infuriating for others.

Some aspects of this may be simply purchasing a new mask or hat, where others focus more around abilities and weapons for the character which have real in game capabilities. We’ve seen this type of customization in games like the uber popular Fortnite, which has players dressing in some of the most outlandish outfits. So while the in game currency may take some time to store up for that next card pack, the overall difficulty remains even across all players.

Pros:

• New characters and abilities, infusing an exciting element for lovers of the original game looking for a new experience.
• Mix of online and offline, single and multiplayer modes ensure that players of all skill levels are able to find enjoyment with this game.

Cons:

• Difficult to learn for new players, although if they remain offline until confident in their understanding of the game mechanics this shouldn’t be too problematic.
