POLYGON

I am not ashamed to admit that I was wrong about POLYGON. This is a free-to-play first-person shooter and one of the better ones. The game as I write this is technically still in its beta release and considering that, what we have here is pretty damn solid. I played this with five of my friends and we actually got really into it for a few weeks and it was our go to game, even surpassing our two main first-person shooters that we play all of the time. I just wanted to come on here today to let you know that when it comes to free-to-play first-person shooters, there are way worse ones out there than this!

The Expendables!

One of the reasons that I think I had so much fun playing POLYGON was because I was playing it with my friends. You can play in matches with up to 32 players, 16 on each team. My friends and I just had our own squad and we had so much fun with each of us pretending to be an action movie star, I had a heated argument with my friend Dan that I should be the one to be JCVD! He won the coin toss, but it is ok, I ended up being The Rock! The point I am making here is that I feel like this game is way, way more fun if you are playing with people that you know, which brings me to my next point.

There Is No I In Team!

POLYGON is a team based shooter, it is not like you are playing a team deathmatch (ok, you actually are) where you can just run and do your own thing. This is a first-person-shooter where you need to work as a team and communicate with each other to stand any chance. A major reason I say that is that there are some people that take this game very seriously and in my experience, snipers are the freaking devil in this game and have a major advantage over others! You need to take out any snipers as soon as you can and the best way to do this is working as a team. I do not think that those who like to solo play their shooters will have as much fun with this.

Making The Most Of What You Have

One area that POLYGON is kind of lacking in is maps. Now to be fair, while there is not exactly a ton of maps like you get with say a Call of Duty game, from what I understand, this game is being made by just one dude so the fact that there is as many maps as there are is very impressive. I will say that I like how the maps are all so different. There is one that is like bright and all open, kind of more like a Fortnite type map. You also have one that is dark, dirty, and more closed in, sort of like a Call of Duty map.

A Slow Grind

You can spend some real money on the game if you want, but that is not how me and my friends roll! Two of us being Scottish is probably the reason for that! POLYGON has a more traditional method of progression in the game than you get with like a season pass type system. You have to earn money in the game that you use to buy your new gear which is fair enough, but as you would expect from a free-to-to play game, you do earn the money very slowly. I think if they gave you a bit more guns to start off with, the grind would not feel as bad. To be fair, they do have to make money somewhere so I cannot hate on them too much here.

8

I have to say, I was impressed with POLYGON. I do not think it would win me and my friends over from the likes of Call of Duty: Warzone or even Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, however, I am not exaggerating when I say that there was a good solid month where this was our main game that we wanted to play together. If you have a group of friends that love to play first-person-shooters together, I highly recommend that you give this one a try.

Pros:

  • This is a lot of fun to play with your friends
  • While there are not a ton of maps, the diversity of the maps is great
  • I liked how it was more tactical based than just run and gun
  • It is a nice distraction/change from the other big FPS games

Cons:

  • They could do with adding a bit more content to the game sooner than later
  • I could see the progression system in the game being a bit slow for some people
