How do you follow up a game that was so bad that even the developers disowned it? By creating a fourth installment with a spelling mistake, of course! Postal 4: No Regerts is a game now built around the admission that this game's franchise is terrible. So why on earth would we spend our time and money on a title that we know isn't going to be winning any game of the year awards?

Well, simple. There seems to be a growing cult around bad games, and the epitome of these are those members of the Postal franchise. But clearly, there's a bit of love and care being put into Postal 4: No Regerts, considering it's been in early access for nearly three years now. So maybe the developers are trying to make amends for the previous poor effort? Let's see how the game is coming along.

Fourth Time's the Charm

It's been a while since the predecessor's release, which can be argued as one of the worst games—nearly ten years. It invites most to believe that the franchise was probably dead in the water. But here we are with Postal 4: No Regerts making a triumphant return to the open-world first-person shooter fold. So let's recap on the core gameplay that defines the series.

You'll play as Postal dude, a drifter that causes damage, death, and despair wherever he sees to end up. Every town he settles in has some story that aligns with the game's overall objectives. However, the gameplay mainly consists of doing odd jobs to meet ends. That includes smuggling migrants, hits-for-hire, and other outlandish tasks that no one seems to want to do.

Nothing much has changed in Postal 4: No Regerts early access. However, the developers have embraced the comedy value and cultish poorness even more than before. Animations are intentionally poor, visuals are relatively average, and the gameplay is weird. Yep, it already has all the hallmarks of a cult classic. But the most important thing - is it entertaining?

As much as you'd hate to say it, Postal 4: No Regerts is pretty fun. It would be easy to pan on the game, considering the franchise doesn't have the most glistening reputation. The competition promotes the idea of open-world silliness, much to the player's content. It gives you endless options to live and die by the gun, sword, grenade - pretty much everything. It does feel a bit purposeless in its current stages, but that's OK for the moment.

Too Much Freedom

As fun as Postal 4: No Regerts can be for the player, there's one inherent difficulty in providing this much freedom. That's the optimization factor, where players can crash the game from triggering too many grenades at one time or fill your screen with other sorts of mayhem. It's restricting and ultimately frustrates players when they're only trying to have a good time.

But let's not take away from the fact that this is a massive improvement over the predecessor. We'd argue that Postal 4: No Regerts has the potential of Saints Row IV while retaining the silly factor of Duke Nukem Forever. The game needs work leading up to its full release, but still entertaining in its current state.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Massive improvements in open-world gameplay
  • Humor value is fantastic
  • Liberal mechanics so players can play how they want

Cons:

  • The game is not optimized to handle heavy volumes of assets
  • Still feels aimless
  • The crude and crass nature of the game may annoy certain players.
