Power Rangers Super Megaforce for the Nintendo 3DS is a game based on the hit TV series of the same name. I grew up with Power Rangers and while the 16-bit games of my day were not exactly amazing, my love for the series still let me have fun with them Fast forward many years later and I have a son of my own who now loves his modern day Power Rangers so I had fun playing the newer games with him. This game came out just as his love for the series was starting to drop a little, but this is still a game I am pretty familiar with.

Where Is The Pizazz???

The first thing I have to say about Power Rangers Super Megaforce is that it is greatly lacking the excitement of the TV show. There is a very barebones story being told here that was pretty much lifted from a few episode arcs from the TV series. I am ok with this as other Power Rangers games have done this before. However, there are no cool cut scenes or anything like that, the story unfolds with text boxes which makes you want to just skip it all.

Ranger-Palooza!

I was pretty excited when I fired the game up as there is a massive roster of characters. Power Rangers Super Megaforce does make you unlock the majority of them, but this still got me pumped that I could play as Rangers other than the ones from the show. Each Ranger has a close range and ranged attack as well as a charge attack. The thing is, this is a “just mash A” kind of game as the other attacks are far too weak to do any real damage. You run from left to right in a classic 90s beat-em-up style and put a beating on any enemies that come your way. I have certainly played worse games in this style, but there is just a real lack of excitement all around here.

Calling In The Zords

The best part of Power Rangers Super Megaforce has to be the boss battles. You get to take control of a few different Zords here and that is always a lot of fun. While the gameplay may seem similar to when you are just a standard Power Ranger.

You have to deal with things a bit more strategically here as the enemy AI is a bit smarter so you have to worry about blocking and using the right attacks at the right time. I think that they should have put more of this stuff in the game as it would have really broken up the less than exciting regular sections of the game suffer from.

I have to say that for me (and my son) Power Rangers started to lose steam after the Power Rangers Samurai series. I would not say that Power Rangers Super Megaforce is a bad game, but it is just not a very exciting one. I think that a younger kid who is really into Power Rangers, especially the Super Megaforce series will probably have a great deal of fun with this game. For me, I just think that they phoned this one in a bit.
